"To know what it is to be a slave one must be in the collar, one must be a slave." "What are you?" Page 197 - Assassin of Gor Slavery on Gor is a widely accepted institution of daily life. Even the Priest Kings themselves condemned all woman to slavery. "In Gorean mythology, it is said that there was once a war between men and women, and that the women lost, and the Priest Kings not wishing the women to be killed, made them beautiful, but as the price of this gift decreed that they, and their daughters, to the end of time, would be the slaves of men." Dancer of Gor, Pg 352 You have either found yourself here on Gor from another planet called Earth, or you have recently found yourself in a collar. You may even have been raised on Gor, and slave, yet you require further training. Either way, you are now on a mission, a life altering endeavor to survive your new status as slave. Gor is harsh, Gor is a man's world. Females are free only because the men allow it. Slaves are nothing but chattle, however, some slaves, if pleasing and trained well, are considered valuable prized possessions and loved. Within these pages, you will find all that is needed to be the perfect Kajira. Your journey will not be an easy one, in fact, it will be harsh and met with much discipline. This will only enforce your position on this world and teach you through trial and error. Everything one needs to know about slaves in general will be found within these pages. Everything one needs, to be desired, is available in detail and descriptive quotes confirming a slave's life on Gor. Through training, you have the option of being lax, being insolent, back talking and thinking your actions will get you out of a collar. However, you will also find yourself whipped severely and possibly dead. Ultimately, the decision lies in your hands and heart. You are the one to decide your own fate as a slave. "Do you know, ultimately," I asked, "who will prove to be your one best trainer?" "No, Master," she said. "You, yourself," I said, "the girl, herself, eager to please, imaginative and intelligent, monitoring her own performances and feelings, striving lovingly to improve and refine them. You yourself will be largely responsible for making yourself the superb slave you will become." Page 210 - Savages of Gor Unless otherwise noted, all materials are |

Everything is part of the overall training. Each step is to be studied, learned, and displayed to perfection. Slaves are brought or desired for what they can exhibit and how well trained they are... Slaves who cannot learn or are unwilling to learn, are simply killed. “But the best trainers you will have,“ I said,” will be your particular Masters, and yourself….. Each master will train his own girl according to his own interests and tastes………..and each girl will train herself to be his special slave, specifically and personally.” Below are the different areas of training outlined, descriptive and quoted for more in depth overall training. Training (Basics) Learning "Learning was closely associated, even immediately, with reward and punishment. Sometimes, months later, even when not under the switch, a girl would, upon a mistake in grammar or vocabulary, wince, as though expecting a fresh sting of the switch. Goreans do not coddle their slave girls. This is one of the first lessons a girl learns." |

It helps them learn quickly that they are slaves. Later, when the girl is well trained and her services become perfections she may be treated more leniently, even lovingly, like a dog. To be sure, if she should become in the least bit lax, the original strictures, or worse, will be instantly reimposed, or instituted. This basically sums it all up, training entails everything from positions to serves, pleasures and dance, even having the knowledge and ability to converse and entertain. The training of a slave is done in accordance with the whip. For without discipline and the proof that one is owned and can be molded to their owners liking, a slave will never thrive and learn her own submission. Your training is what you make of it, you are your own asset, accept it, embrace it, beg for and learn from each lesson. For they are what build your confidence, and make you unique. The training of the slave girls progressed. It had begun, following the period entirely consumed with exercises, with such small things as instruction on how to stand, to walk, to kneel, to recline, to eat, to drink. Grace and beauty, following Sura, and I would scarcely dare dispute such an authority, is mostly a matter of expression, both that of the face and body. I could, week to week, see the change in the girls, even Elizabeth. Some of the things they were taught seemed to me very silly, but I, at the same time, found it difficult to object. As for those questions that slaves fear or have, there is only one answer to them all. That being, he is Master, you are slave. There is nothing you can do in certain situations except find ways to accept things with joy. Find the good in things and people, and realize, you are a slave. "But what if he is weak?" she begged. "Continue to serve him, in the fullness of your slavery, begging him for the least of his kisses, the most casual of his caresses." "Yes, master," she said, tears in her eyes. "Even such small attentions, you will discover, now that you have become sensitized to your slavery, will be precious to you." "But what if he is stupid?" she asked. "Beg him to sell you, or give you away," I said, "that you may, if only in being sold off on the block, come into the collar of another, one capable of satisfying what you are, a slave." "But what if he will not sell me, or give me away?" she said. "Then," said I angrily,"that is how it will be, for it is you who wear the collar. He is the master. You are the slave." For you Barbarians who can't fathom or comprehend this new life you are now forced into, welcome to Gor. In time you will learn there is no way home. In time you will learn there is no other place for you in this world except in a collar. In time, you will learn your slavery. "You are a slave,' I said. 'You are owned. You are a female. You will be forced to be a woman. If you were free, and Gorean, you might be permitted by men to remain as you are, but you are neither Gorean nor free. The Gorean man will accept no compromise on your femininity, not from a slave. She will be what he wishes, and that is a woman, fully, and his. If necessary you will be whipped or starved. You may fight your Master. He will, if he wishes, permit this, to prolong the sport of your conquest, but in the end, it is you who are the slave; it is you who will lose. On Earth you had the society at your back, the result of centuries of feminization; he could not so much as speak harshly to you but you could rush away or summon magistrates; here, however, society is not at your back, but at his; it will abet him in his wishes, for you are only a slave; you will have no one to call, nowhere to run; you will be alone with him, and at his mercy. Further, he has not been conditioned with counterinstinctual value sets, programmed with guilt, taught self-hatred; he has been taught pride and has, in the very air he breathes, imbibed the mastery of females. These are different men. They are not Earthlings. They are Goreans. They are strong, and they are hard, and they will conquer you. For a man of Earth, you might never be a woman. For a man of Gor, I assure you, my dear, sooner or later you will be.' " "Indeed, I suspected that there would always be more to learn about service and love, that such things were fathomless and limitless, and, thus, in a sense, the notion of being "fully trained," or knowing all there was to know, was in actuality less of a practical goal than a lovely ideal, one which might perhaps be approached ever more closely, but would never be, and perhaps should never be, fully attained. Let the girl revel in her growth, and not fear that one day there will be no more to learn, nowhere else to go. There are no summits on the heights of love." Page 129 - Dancer of Gor The main thing to remember as a slave is: You are an extension of your Owner. You represent your Owner and their abilities, as well as everything they possess. If you bring shame to yourself, you dishonor your Owner. If you dishonor your Owner, you will be killed. Rarely are slaves freed, if ever. Accept your position, cherish it, own it, live it, desire it, in time you will find, it might have been the best decision you have ever made. "She laughed. It was true. Gorean men, on the whole, do not free slaves. The freeing of a girl is almost unheard of. This makes sense. They are not free women. They are belongings, valuables, slaves, treasures. Who discards precious possessions, who surrenders treasures? If the slave girl were worth less perhaps she would be freed more. She is too marvelous to free; and if she is not marvelous, she can be slain. Too, what man who has known the glory and joy of a girl at his feet is likely to wish to exchange that for the inconvenience and bother of a free woman? No, slave girls, for all practical purposes, are not freed. They will remain in one collar or another. Men will have it that way." Page 90 - Explorers of Gor “I had been conquered and enraptured, destroyed and renewed, Training of a Pleasure Slave "...sexuality is . .. almost entirely a function of the imagination and brain. The slave girl knows she is a slave ... and that passion is not only permitted to her but required of her. Indeed, she may be whipped or slain if she is insufficiently passionate ... her sexuality is impressed on her in a thousand, subtle ways. Certain modes of speech are expected of her and certain gestures and postures. She must for example address free persons deferentially and commonly, kneel in their presence. Her garb, too, is commonly distinctive, usually inexpensive and brief, sometimes only a rag, designed to remind her of her lowliness and to leave little doubt to her charms. Her throat is encircled by a collar which will identify her Master. Sometimes, too, the collar will bear the name by which he has decided to call her and her thigh or some other part of her body, will be branded. "One commands and uses a slave totally. That is what they are for. They must serve completely. They must deliver, at so little as a word or gesture, immediately and unquestioningly, whatever the master desires. One gets from a slave all that a man could "The lessons of which the man had spoken were not all linguistic, of course. I had also received lessons in the proper performance of domestic services, such as cooking, sewing, laundering, cleaning, and such. Other lessons were almost lessons in customs, manners, and decorum. For example, we were taught how to serve at a table, deferentially, skillfully, unobtrusively and for the most part, silently. How to move and walk and kneel and rise, gracefully, and even such tiny interesting things as how to pick u a fallen object by crouching down, retrieving it, rather than bending over. We were being taught it seemed to be graceful and beautiful. Too, of course, we were taught our place and proper relations to men. A significant portion of our training was intimate and erotic, or sexual and sensual in nature, ranging from such things as make-up, body ornamentation, cosmetics and perfumes, to techniques, psychological and physical, generally a combination of both of pleasing men. In the latter range of our studies some of the girls were even instructed in the rudiments of what, perhaps for lack of a better word might be described, using the Earth expression ,,, as “ethnic dance.” Dancer of Gor, pages 69-70 ...sexuality is .. almost entirely a function of the imagination and brain. Rogue of Gor, pages 169-170 Slavers often deprive a female slave of a mans touch for 2 to 3 days before her sale. She almost invariably brings a higher price.. Her need, manifested in her piteous display of herself, in her physical attitudes, her gestures and expressions, is evident and often amusing to the buyers. Rogue of Gor, page 171 She had immediately knelt, for she was in the presence of a free man...she had suddenly dropped her eyes. I saw a tiny movement in her hands, on her thighs, as though she would turn them, exposing the palms to me, but then she pressed them down her thighs, hard. I crouched beside her. Then I smiled. I smelled slave heat. Explorers of Gor, page 81 In a slaver house, training is done by use of what is called a stimulation cage, someone ornate, but always barred, roomy except for low ceiling, about 5 feet high. a girl housed in such a cage is not permitted to look into the eyes of any male, this it to make the girl extremely conscious of males. a girl is taught living senses and to have a living body.. to be much more passionate and alive.. her skin an extensive organ, every bit alive and wanting, feeling, needing. Tribesman of Gor, page At a gesture from my master I knelt. I did so in the manner in which I had been taught, back on my heels, back straight, hands on thighs, head high, chin up. I did not neglect a further detail. I spread my knees, widely. It was the position, of course, as I would later learn, of the Gorean pleasure slave. Slave Girl of Gor, page 78 I looked at the girl. I nodded to her to approach me. She did so. I held my left hand open, at my waist. She stiffened, and looked at me, angrily. I opened and closed my left hand once. I saw her training in Gorean customs had been thorough. But she never thought that such a gesture would be used to her. She came beside me, and a bit behind me, and, crouching, put her head down, deeply. I fastened my hand in her hair. She winced. Women are helpless in this position. Beasts of Gor, page 409 One commands and uses a slave totally. That is what they are for. They must serve completely. They must deliver, at so little as a word or gesture, immediately and unquestioningly, whatever the master desires. One gets from a slave all that a man could Mercenaries of Gor, page 403 _________________________________________________ "You said you were no stranger to scrolls," I said. "To some, Master," she said. "I did not mean to be arrogant. If I have not been pleasing, lash me." "Have you read," I asked, "the Manuals of the Pens of Mira, Leonora’s Compendium, the Songs of Dina, or Hargon’s The Nature and Arts of the Female Slave?" "No, Master," she said eagerly. "Such texts, and numerous others, like them, are sometimes utilized in a girl’s training, particularly by professional slavers. Sometimes they are read aloud in training sessions by a scribe, a whip master in attendance. Most girls are eager to acquire such knowledge. Indeed, they often ply one another for secrets of love, makeup, costuming, perfuming, dance, and such, as each wishes to be as perfect for her master as lies within her power to be. Also of course, such diligence if prudential on her part. She will be lashed if she is not pleasing. Also, her very life, literally, is in his hands. Perhaps a word is in order pertaining to the Songs of Dina. Some free women claim that this book, which is supposedly written by Dina, "a slave," which continues to appear in various editions and revision, because of its intelligence and sensitivity, is actually, and must be, written by a free woman. I suspect, on the other hand, that it is truly by a slave, as is claimed on the title page. There are reasons for this. First, "Dina" is a common slave name, often given to girls with the "Dina" brand, which is a small roselike brand. Second, the nature of the songs themselves. No free woman could have sung the chains and love and the lash, and the glory of masters as she. Those are songs which, in my opinion, could be written only by a woman who knew what it was to be at a man’s slave ring. As to the matter of the poetess’ intelligence and sensitivity, I surely grant them to the free woman, but maintain that such are entirely possible in a slave, and even more to be expected in her then in then. I suspect their position may even be inconsistent. When a woman is enslaved, for example, surely they do not suppose that her intelligence and sensitivity disappear. Surely they would not expect theirs to do so, if they had them. No, she still has them. Also it has been my personal experience, for what it is worth, that slaves are almost always more intelligent and sensitive than free women, who often, at least until taken in hand, tend to be ignorant, smug, vain and stupid. Also, it might be noted that many woman are enslaved not simply because if it convenient to do so, the ropes are handy, so to speak, or because they are beautiful of face and figure, but actually because of their intelligence and sensitivity, qualities which appeal to many Gorean men. Indeed, such qualities commonly raise a girl’s price. Also, as I have suggested, the intelligence and sensitivity of many women actually tends to blossom in bondage, finding within it the apt environment for its expression, for its flowering. This may have to do with such matters as the release of inhibitions, happiness, fulfillment, and such. I do not know." "What of the Prition of Clearchus of Cos?" I asked. "A Cosian?" said Marcus. "Yes," I said. "That will not be found in Ar," he said. "It used to be," I said, "at least before the war." "Yes, Master," she beamed. "I have read it!" "You, a free girl, have read it?" I asked. To be sure the book is a classic. "Yes, Master," she smiled. "Does your father know you have read it?" I asked. "No, Master," she said. "What do you suppose he would do to you, if he found out?" I asked. "I think he would sell me, Master," she said. "And appropriately," I said. "Yes, Master," she smiled. "Stand," I said. "Turn about. Cross your wrists behind you." "Yes, Master!" she said eagerly, complying. "Oh!" she said, bound. "Turn about," I said. Swiftly she did so, and looked shyly up at me. She tested the fiber on her wrists, subtly, attempting to do so inconspicuously, trying its snugness and strength, its effectiveness. She put down her head and suddenly, inadvertently, shuddered with pleasure. I had used capture knots. She knew herself helpless. I supposed it was the first time she had ever been bound. The freedom to express desires and wanton needs, the freedom of giving everything you are to another. The freedom of being desired, cherished, with no worries, no cares other then to be willingly pleasing. The freedom, of being owned. Page 303 - Nomads of Gor ”But if I wanted their touch, why should I not ask for it, or beg for it? As a slave what else could I do? Too, even if my needs and my interests, and the incredible depth and intensity of my desires proved that I was "worthless" and without "merit", I did not care! I was worthless because I was only a property! I was worthless because I was bond! I was worthless because I was the sort of woman who could be put upon a slave block and be sold! I was worthless because I was only an owned animal! Of course I did not have "merit"! I was beyond "worth" and "merit" of those sorts, I was only a slave! But thus I could be as free, and piteous and begging, and lewd, and loving, and sexual as I wished! I had nothing to conceal, nothing to keep secret. I belonged to my master, all of me, my thoughts, my love, my body, everything I was and could be!” Dancer of Gor, page 215 "Freedom permits a woman to live without a man. Slavery makes a woman need a mans touch... Slavery, of course, is the surest path by means of which a woman can discover her femininity. The paradox of the collar is the freedom which a woman experiences in at last finding herself, and becoming herself." Page 160 - Magicians of Gor "The Goreans claim that in each woman there is a free companion, proud and beautiful, worthy and noble, and in each, too, a slave girl. The companion seeks for her companion; the slave girl for her master. It is further said, that on the couch, the Gorean girl, whether slave or free, who has had the experience, who has tried all loves, begs for a master. She wishes to belong completely to a man, withholding nothing, permitted to withhold nothing. And, of course, of all women, only a slave girl can truly belong to a man, only a slave girl can be truly his, in all ways, utterly, totally, completely, his, selflessly, at his mercy, his ecstatic slave, helpless and joyous in the total submission which she is given no choice but to yield." Page 102 - Hunters of Gor "I looked down upon her. "You are a wanton slave," I said. She looked up at me laughing, "A girl in a collar is not permitted inhibitions," she said. It was true, slave girls must reveal their sexual nature, totally. Do they not do so , they are beaten." Page 278 - Marauders of Gor "Most female slaves," said Hassan, "walk very proudly. They are proud of their slavery, and their mastery by men. They have learned their womanhood. It has been taught to them. In their way, though imbonded, totally, I suppose they are the truest and freest of women. They are closest, perhaps, to the essentials of the female, those of subservience to the masculine will, obedience, service and pleasure. In being most themselves, utter slave, they are most free. Given the proper master they are quite content. In the proper collar a woman is serene, and joyful." Page 332 - 333 - Tribesmen of Gor "How beautiful I must look to him, I thought. And I had sensed his incredible maleness, the animal maleness of him, so different from the thwarted, crippled sexuality so commended and tragically endemic among the males of Earth. For the first time in my life I felt I understood what might be the meaning of the expression "male," and as I lay before him, too, dimly, it frightening me, what might be the meaning of the expression "female." How beautiful, I thought, I must look to him, lying bound, totally vulnerable, helpless at his feet. How such a sight must stir the splendor of his manhood, to see the female, his, caught, helpless at his feet, his to do with in lust and pleasure, and joy, as he pleased, helpless to escape him, free for him to work his will upon her!" Page 27 - Slave Girl of Gor "It is easy to tell among girls which are familiar with their condition and which are not. Once a girl truly understands that she is a slave, and there is no escape for her, once she understands it truly, emotionally, categorically, intellectually, physiologically, totally, deeply, profoundly, in every cell in her beautiful body, a fantastic transformation occurs in her. She then knows she is truly a slave. She then becomes wild and free, and sexual, and cares not that she might be scorned by the free either for her miserable condition or helpless appetites; she knows she will be what she must; she has no choice; she is slave. Women, in their heart, long to submit; this is necessary for the slave girl; she must submit or die; submitted, she is thrilled to the core; she lives then for love and service, bound to the will of her master. The joy of the slave girl may seem incomprehensible to the free but it is a reality." Page 55 - Beasts of Gor "There is something about being owned, and belonging to another, which is very meaningful to a woman," she said. "It is also, in a way that is hard to make clear to a man, profoundly satisfying." Page 312 - Beasts of Gor "On Gor," she said, "I have experienced feelings and sensations I never knew could exist. Inhibitions have been shattered, some of them commanded from me by strong men and the blows of the whip, I have learned to live and to feel. My emotions have been freed. My deepest sexuality and nature have on this world at last been fully liberated. I have found myself. I love and I serve. I now know at last what and who I am, a love slave for uncompromising masters." Page 18 - Rogue of Gor "The only freedom I would now desire," said Mira "would be the freedom to be totally a slave." Page 296 - Blood Brothers of Gor "She did not even respond to me, but only cried out softly, moaning. The fullness of a woman's orgasms, of course, in the totality of their physiological and psychological dimensions can be attained only by the female slave, the woman who is fully owned and finds herself at the complete mercy of a dominating and powerful master." Page 333 - Fighting Slave of Gor "I exist for you," she said, "and it is what I want, to please and serve you." She was much in love. She wanted to give all of herself to him, irreservedly, to hold nothing back, to live for him, and, if necessary, to die for him. It is the way of the female in love, for whom no service is too small, no sacrifice too great, offering herself selflessly as an oblation to the master." Page 27 - Magicians of Gor "The love of a slave girl is the deepest and most profound love that any woman can give a man. Love makes a woman a man"s slave, and the wholeness of that love requires that she be, in truth, his slave." Page 31 - Magicians of Gor "My condition, my status, is doubtless clear to you. Would it not be clear from the speaking of chains, and collars, and such? You may find it objectionable. I do not. I love it. In it I find my fulfillment, my happiness, my joy!; Perhaps you think what I am is degrading, and perhaps it is, but, if so, it is a delicious, precious, joyful degradation which I treasure, and in which I thrive and prosper, and one I would not, at the expense of my very life, have otherwise. We must strive be perfection all ways, for anyone. that is part of what is to be a slave. In reconciling myself to bondage I had, also, to reconcile myself to this condition, it is a part of bondage. It is something which the slave must accept. Without it there can be no true slavery. I had accepted this condition, at least theoretically, verbally acknowledging its incumbency on me, in my training. somehow, interestingly, this acceptance too, seemed liberating to me, it made my bondage much more real to me. Too, interestingly, in its way, it also made it seem much more precious to me." Page 92 - Dancer of Gor "It is almost impossible for a girl to keep her thoughts or feelings from her master. He knows her too well. Most girls are extremely responsive to their masters, and love them deeply, with that incredible love which can be known only by an enslaved woman, that love which a woman can accord only to a man who is her total master. Yet I would be remiss did I not mention that even the most vital, animate slave, delightedly conversing with her master, knows that at a mere snap of his fingers she may have to tear aside her garments and serve him as a chain slut. She is owned. Too, many slave girls are kept by men who are harsh and cold to them, who despise them as mere slaves. These girls, too, of course, must obey. They, too, of course, must perform perfectly for their masters." Page 99 - Fighting Slave of Gor Be Fully Pleasing "But I knew, looking down at those faces, that if any of them owned me, I would have to be fully pleasing to them. I would have to bend all of my efforts, and all of my beauty, my charm, my grace, my knowledge, my intelligence, my tact, everything that I was, and could hope be, to that end. I would have to be to them, and perfectly, a pleasure slave. And what horrified me most, I think, was that I wanted this. I wanted to serve men, and give them pleasure, to be precious to them, to be loved and appreciated, to make them happy." Page 135 - Dancer of Gor Be Eager "We must thus see to it that we are marvels to them, that we serve them with eagerness and perfections. This is not a matter , incidentally, of serving regardless of our will and possible desires, or in spite of them, but of actually adjusting our will and desires, in such a way that they now find expression and fulfillment even in such service." In such a situation you would be expected to efface yourself, and humbly serve. You would not speak unless you were spoken to, and then presumably only to respond deferentially to commands. You would remain in the background, a mere instrument to serve us. In no way would you in the slightest be permitted to detract from the impression or effect the free woman desires to create or compete with her in any way. You would be nothing in the room but an almost invisible convenience." Beasts of Gor, page 276 Be Honest "The absolute truth must be spoken to a Gorean master. It is forbidden to a girl to hide her feelings." Page 346 - Captive of Gor "A slave girl is not permitted to conceal anything from her master. She is his. She must be completely open to him, in all ways, and at all times." Page 84 - Hunters of Gor Show Emotions "Emotion is not only positive, but necessary; the mastery of it is not up to the female. It is up to the male. She is to be every bit the writhing, crying, joyful, and utterly female being she can possibly be. It would be cruel to suggest otherwise." Page 17- Tribesmen of Gor Be Thankful Marauders of Gor, Pg 155 Show Exquisite Beauty and Absolute Obedience "What are my duties?", I asked. Slave Girl of Gor, Pg 261 DON'T'S Do Not Be Insubordinant "Insubordination, slaves are quickly taught, is not acceptable, in any way, to the Gorean Master." Page 123 - Kajira of Gor "Insubordination in any form, of any sort, in even the tiniest, least significant degree, is not accepted from slave girls by their Gorean Masters." Players of Gor, Page 227 Do Not Try to Manipulate "Did you strike me because I challenged your manhood?" she asked." You were not struck for such an absurd reason," I said. "You were struck, rather, because you were attempting to manipulate me." Page 422 - Merceneries of Gor Do Not be Disrespectful "Forgive me, Master," she said. "I was not respectful. It was appropriate that I be cuffed." Page 193 - Magicians of Gor Do Not Be Curious "Curiosity is not becoming in a Kajira is a common Gorean saying. The girl learns quickly that it is not her business to meddle in the affairs of her master but, rather, to be beautiful, and serve him, abjectly and totally." "Curiosity is not becoming in a kajira" he said. "nonetheless" I said "we are notoriously curious. Doubtless the saying would not have otherwise gained such wide currency." Do Not Have a Command Repeated "Strip,” he said. “There are others present,” she protested. His right hand, in a backhand blow, lashed forth, fierce and powerful, striking her from her knees to her side on the tiles. She rose to her hands and knees and, blood at her mouth, regarded him, disbelievingly. “Must a command be repeated?” he inquired. Swiftly she tore away the slave tunic, stripping herself." Guardsman of Gor, Page 257 Do Not Expect Anything "So, it is all the will of men?" she said, through her tears. "All the debts, all the owing, all the payments? And nothing is owed to me?" Page 204 - Magicians of Gor Do Not Expect Explanations "Surely you must understand," he said......"A slave girl requires no explanation," I said. "It is hers only to obey." Slave Girl of Gor, page 424 Do Not Expect Protection "The discipline of a slave," I said, "may be attended to by any Free Person, otherwise she might do much what she wished, provided only her Master did not learn of it." The legal principle is clear, and has been upheld in several courts, in several cities, including Ar." Do Not Conceal Anything "A slave girl is not permitted to conceal anything from her master. She is his. She must be completely open to him, in all ways, and at all times." Page 84 - Hunters of Gor "Slaves, of course, being mere articles of property, are not entitled to privacy." Guardsman of Gor, 171 Do Not have Inhibitions "I looked down upon her. "You are a wanton slave," I said. She looked up at me laughing, "A girl in a collar is not permitted inhibitions," she said. It was true, slave girls must reveal their sexual nature, totally. Do they not do so , they are beaten." Page 278 - Marauders of Gor Do Not Shortchange your Beauty "Slave girls are not permitted to shortchange their beauty. They must fulfill its promise" Page 416 - Magicians of Gor Do "NOT" try to top the Master "Sometimes slaves are skillful in immeshing masters in the toils of their beauty. How often do they conquer us with their softness! How often are we the victims of their delicious, insidious charms and wiles! What drums and alarms are found, upon occasion, in their glances and smiles. What battalions can march in a tearful eye and a trembling lip. What potent strategies can lurk in the line of a breast or the turn of a hip. How a bent knee and a bowed head can wrench a man's guts. Helplessness and vulnerability seem strange shields; how implausible is gentleness as an instrument of diplomacy; what an unlikely weapon is her tenderness. Who is most powerful, I wondered, the master or the slave? Then I realized that it is the master who is most powerful for he may, if he wishes, put her on the block and sell her or dispose of her in any way he pleases. In the end, in the final analysis, it is he, and not she, who holds the whip. It is she who, in the end, must kneel at the feet of a master, completely at his mercy, her will, in the final analysis, nothing. It is she who, in the end, in the final analysis, is owned, and must please, absolutely." Blood Brothers of Gor, page 316 Do Not Speak Against a Free Man "The demeaning of men, whereas it is permitted to, and not unknown among, free women, is not permitted to female slaves. Such, on their part, can be a capital offense." Magicians of Gor, page 226 Do Not Speak Without Permission "Master!" she wept. Player of Gor, page 259 "May I speak, Master?" asked the girl. Vagabonds of Gor, page 486 "Blood ran from my mouth; other blood I swallowed. My vision cleared; I could not believe the pounding of my heart. I had been cuffed. I knelt, terrified. At that time I did not realize how light had been my discipline considering the gravity of my offense. I had both spoken without permission, and broken position without permission. Most simply, I had been displeasing to a free man. Slave Girl of Gor, Page 34 Some slaves think perhaps because they are more trained, or more beautiful, that they have an option of who they wish to serve. Wrong! No matter who owns you, or who Masters you at any given time, a slave is to be pleasing always, and serve with the utmost desire and perfection, completely. "Too, many slave girls are kept by men who are harsh and cold to them, who despise them as mere slaves. These girls, too, of course, must obey. “They give me to anyone here...... Some are hideous, some smell, in the fetid breath of some I almost choke and die, and yet I must serve them, unquestioningly....... "One often makes a slave absolutely helpless, and then does what one wants with her. One commands and uses a slave totally. That is what they are for. They must serve completely. They must deliver, at so little as a word or gesture, immediately and unquestioningly, whatever the master desires. One gets from a slave all that a man could possibly want from a woman, and more, simply taking it from her, or ordering her to provide it." "I had little doubt that not all men on this world could be of the nature of Teibers and Ulricks, and the guards in the house where I had been trained. Doubtless there were men here too, if not as on Earth, men who might be fretful, petty and weak, men the very sight and smell of which I might find offensive, men whose appearance and least touch I might find literally sickening, men I might find unutterably, disgusting, men who were unclean , who were cruel, and loathsome and gross, who might be hideous and frightful, men I might find myself shrinking from, almost vomiting in disgust and terror, but they would own me, as much as any other, and I would be obliged, as a slave, to bring myself warmly and unquestioningly into their arms, and bring my lips obediently and hotly to theirs, to submit wholly to them, to give myself wholly to them, holding back nothing, to please them, fully and intimately. These things were simple attachments of my condition, consequences of what I was, I could not change them. They were simply part of what it meant to be a slave. We do not chose our masters nor is it up to us, whether or not we will please them or to what degree. We must strive to be perfection in all ways, for anyone. That is part of what is to be a slave. It is something which the slave must accept." |

Some are used for pleasure, some for work, some for cooking and some merely to look at. Depending on the preference of the Master and his use of a slave, girls are sought out for different reasons. Luckily for Masters wishing a particular slave, there is a vast variety to choose from. Certain slaves are only good for one thing, however, slaves can be taught. " 'Are many Gorean slave girls of Earth origin?' she asked. "Soon she ws gasping. She was an Earth girl. She was not in the condition of the Gorean slave girl, with her almost perfect diet, imposed by masters, her muscles toned by a regime of exercises, her legs and wind toughened by long hours of training in sensuous dance." " 'You excite me, Master,' she said. 'Does that horrify you? Does that scandalize you? Does it startle and discomfort you, does it so dismay you, does it seem so hard to comprehend, that a woman from Earth could be sexually excited, that she could have sexual desires, that she could feel helpless and frustrating passion, that she could beg even to be sexually satisfied?' Bath Girls Beneath the toweling Nela wore nothing; about her neck, rather than a common slave collar, she like the other bath girls, wore a chain and plate. On her plate was the legend: I am Nela of the Capacian Baths. Pool of Blue Flowers. I cost one tarsk. Nela was an expensive girl, thought there were pools where the girls cost as much as a silver tarn disk. The tarsk is a silver coin, worth forty copper tarn disks. All the girls in the Pool of Blue Flowers cost the same, except novices in training who would go for ten or fifteen copper tarn disks. There were dozens of pools in the vast, spreading Capacian Baths. In some of the larger pools the girls went as cheaply as one copper tarn disk. For the fee one was entitled to use the girl as he wished for as long as he wished, his use of course, limited by the hours of the pool’s closing. The first time I had seen Nela, several days ago, she had been playing in the pool alone, rolling about. It took but one glance and I dove into the water swam to her, seized her by the ankle and dragged her under, kissing her, rolling about beneath the surface. I liked the lips and feel of her and when we broke surface, she and I laughing, I asked her how much she went for. “For a tarsk,”she laughed, and turned about, looking at me, “but you will have to catch me first.” I knew this game of the bath girls, as though they, mere slaves, would dare to truly flee from one who pursued them, and I laughed, and she, too, sensing my understanding, laughed. The girl commonly pretends to swim away but is outdistanced and captured. I knew that few men could, if a bath girl did not wish it, come close to them in the water. They spend much of the day in the water and , it is said, are more at ease in that element than the Cosian song fish. ...The pools were beautiful, and yet I knew that somewhere, chained in darkness, were gangs of male slaves who cleaned them each night; and there were of course the Bath Girls of Ar, of which Nela was one, said to be the most beautiful of all Gor. Harold, as a boy, had once been a slave in the baths, those of the city of Turia, before he had escaped. He had told me that sometimes a Bath Girl, to discipline her, is thrown to the slaves in the darkness. I held Nela a bit more closely to me, and she looked at me, puzzled. ...The girls in the deck cages are permitted to keep their hair. The hair of the below-deck girls, mercifully, is shaved off; indeed, our body hair, too, was shaved off, completely. These precautions prevent, to a great extent, the nesting of ship lice... "The women cried out in misery. To enter the circle, if one is a female, is, by the laws of Torvaldsland, to declare oneself a bond-maid. A woman, of course, need not enter the circle of her own free will. She may, for example, be thrown within it, naked and bound. Howsoever she enters the circle, voluntarily or by force, free or secured, she emerges from it, by the laws of Torvaldsland, as a bond-maid." "I saw people running down the sloping green land, toward the water. Several came form within the palisade. Among them, white kirtled, collared, excited, ran bond-maids. These, upon the arrival of their Master are permitted to greet him. The men of the north enjoy the bright eyes, the leaping bodies, the squealing, the greetings of their bond-bond maids. In the fields I saw an overseer, clad in scarlet, with a gesture of his hand, releasing the thralls. Then, they, too, ran down toward the water." (See Thralls for more Bondsmaid Quotes) Bred Slaves "I remembered, too, the girls in the last tavern, if it was a tavern, lascivious in their dancing silks, pleasure slaves bred like animals for passion. If there were natural slaves and natural free men, as the Older Tarl had insisted, those girls were natural slaves. It was impossible to conceive of them as other than they had been..." "Watching us was a woman in Pleasure Silk, of remarkable beauty, yet with a certain subtle hardness and contempt about her. She wore a yellow collar, that of the House of Cernus, and yellow Pleasure Silk. The slave bells, a double row, were locked on her left ankle. About her throat there hung a slave whistle. From her right hand, looped about the wrist, there dangled a slave goad. She was fairly complected but had extremely dark hair and dark eyes, very red lips; the movement of her exquisite body was a torment to observe; she looked at me with a slight smile, regarding the black of the tunic, the mark of the dagger; her lips were full and magnificiently turned, probably a characteristic bred into her; I had no doubt this black-haired, cruelly beautiful woman was a bred Passion Slave. She was one of the most rawly sensuous creatures on which I had ever looked. "Most Gorean slave girls are comely, or beautiful. This is easy to understand. It is almost always the better looking women who are taken for slaves, and, of course, in breeding slaves, it is commonly only the most beautful of female slaves who are used, these usually being crossed, hooded, with handsome male silk slaves, also hooded. The female offspring of these matings needless to say, are often exquisite.... ..... Some female slaves, incidentally, have a pedigreed lineage going back through several generations of slave matings, and their masters hold the papers to prove this. It is a felmony in Gorean law to forge or falsify such papers....... In the case of the bred female slave, of course, she has been legally and literally, in anyone's understanding, bred to the collar, and in a full commercial and economic sense, as a business speculation on the part of masters. The features most often selected for by the breeders are beauty and passion opposed to the pseudomasculine type of intelligence often found in women with large amounts of male hormones, is commonly linked, apparently genetically, with these two hitherto mentioned properties." Ho-Hak's right ear twitched. His ears were ususual, very large, and with extremely long lower lobes, drawn lower still by small, heavy pendants set in them. He had been a slave, doubtless, and doubtless, judging by the collar, and the large hands and broad back, had served on the galleys, but he had been an unusual slave, a bred exotic, doubtless originally intended by the slave maters for a destiny higher than that of the galley bench. There are various types of "exotics" bred by Gorean slavers, all of whom are to be distinguished from more normal varieties of bred slaves, such as a Passion Slaves and Draft Slaves. Exotics may be bred for almost any purpose, and some of these purposes, unfortunately, seem to be little more than to produce quaint or unusual specimens. Ho-Hak may well have been one so bred. "You are an exotic," I said to him. Ho-Hak's ears leaned forward toward me, but he did not seem angry. He had brown hair, and brown eyes; the hair, long, was tied behind his head with a string of rence cloth. He wore a sleeveless tunic of rence cloth, like most of the rence growers. "Yes," said Ho-Hak. "I was bred for a collector." ...She was fairly complected but had extremely dark hair and dark eyes, very red lips; the movement of her exquisite body was a torment to observe; she looked at me with a slight smile, regarding the black of the tunic, the mark of the dagger; her lips were full and magnificentty turned, probably a characteristic bred into her; I had no doubt this black-haired, cruelly beautiful woman was a bred Passion Slave. She was one of the most rawly sensuous creatures on which I had ever looked. "As I had expected about her white throat there was fastened, graceful and gleaming, the slender, close-fitting collar of a Gorean slave girl. I gathered her in my arms and she fought like a she-larl, screaming, I wanted to convince her that there was no danger, that her fears were groundless. Her fingernails clawed across my face. 'There,' she said, pointing to the small rounded domes set in the sides of the portal. Coin Girl "I unwrapped then the object from the silk on the table. There was the sound of the metal clapper in the narrow, flattish, triangular shaped bell, the rustle of the chain and lock, the sound of the small, metal, sturdy, rectangular, locked coin box. I dangled the chain, the girl bell and the coin box before her eyes. "It is called the Street of the Writhing Slave. It is dark and narrow, and not far from the wharves. It has its name from the fact that most renters of, and dealers in, Coin Girls in Victoria, keep their kennels on this street. The girls of the day, designated by a coiled whip pressed against their left shoulder, wearing their neck chains, with the attached bell and coin box, are sent into the streets in the late afternoon and expected to return before the nineteenth ahn. And woe to the girl who does not return with a jangling coin box on her neck chain! Some girls, once designated, and locked in their accounterments, kneeling, weeping, scratch even at the insides of the stout gates of their masters' houses, hoping to be sent into the streets early, that their chances of turning a profit for their master, and thus avoiding a beating or torture, may be enhanced. Such a lenience, however, is seldom shown to the girls, as it is against an agreement binding the entrepreneurs engaged in this trade. Sometimes the girls are sent into the streets with their hands braceleted behind their backs. Sometimes they are sent into the streets with their small hands free, that they may use them to please their master's customers. Sometimes a new girl is sent into the streets on a leash, with an older girl, that she may learn how a Coin Girl behaves." "The girl had been half naked, in a brown rag. I had thought she had been superb. To be sure Coin Girls are usually regarded as the lowest form of Gorean street slave." "I continued to walk up the Street of the Writhing Slave. Such girls, now, as it was late, past the nineteenth Ahn, would surely, at least for the most part, be chained in their basement kennels, lying on their straw mats, trying to sleep, clutching their thin blankets about their nude bodies." "I regarded her, in the yellowish, flickering light of the tiny tharlarion-oil lamp, late at night, on the rude stones of that dark, narrow street in Victoria. She stood before me, small, slim, exquisite, beautiful. Her binding-fiber-belted, wrap around tunic was brown, and of clinging, thin rep-cloth; it was sleeveless and had a plunging neckline; it was slave short. About her neck there was a chain. From the chain there hung two objects; the first was a narrow, bronze bell, flattish and tapering, with a flat top and ring; when she moved it would sound, calling attention to her whereabouts; the second was a metal coin box, which contained a slot for the deposition of coins; the coin box was locked. I had not heard coins sound, from within the coin box. Too, about her neck, under the chain, with its dangling articles, there was a high, tight leather collar. Her leash, in the hands of the other girl, was attached to a ring at the back of this collar. The leash, too, was of leather, and long. It was coiled four or five times in the hands of the other girl. More Gorean leashes are long. There are two advantages to the long leash. It may be used, if one wishes, to bind the slave, and its long end, if one wishes, may easily serve as a whipping strap." "The girl who held her leash then jerked twice on the leash. 'May I serve your pleasure, Master?' asked the leashed girl. " 'You are a female, and he is a man,' said the girl who held the leash. 'Interest him.' " 'It is late,' said the girl with the leash. 'It is past the nineteenth Ahn. That you should be out now is even against the agreements of the renters of Coin Girls.' " 'A Coin Girl,' said the girl with the leash, 'will struggle to please a man as much for a tarsk bit, as a high paga slave for a thousand gold pieces, to be paid by her master's customer for her use.' Dancing Slave Dancers bring high prices on Gor. Some slavers specialize in dancers, renting them, and buying and selling them. Two such houses in Ar are those of Kelsius and Aurelius. Some say that the finest dancers on Gor are found in Ar; others say that they are found in Port Kar, and others that they are in the Tahari, or in Tuna. These controversies, I think, are fruitless. I have been in many cities and in each I have found marvelous dancers. The matter is further complicated by the buying and selling of girls and their shipment, as merchandise, among cities. A dancer has usually had many masters; her fair throat has been graced by many collars. In some cities if a dancer is not thought to have been sufficiently pleasing she is thrown to the patrons of the tavern to be torn to pieces or beaten. If she is thought to have been sufficiently pleasing she may be auctioned, for the period of an Ahn, to the highest bidder. Display Slave I felt the collar on my throat. It was the collar of Ionicus. I was a work slave. Yet, tonight, I had not served as a work slave, but a pleasure slave. Too, Aulus had chained me at his stirrup. He had used me as a display slave, to enhance his appearance, to add to the effect he might make when he came into the presence of Pietro Vacchi. It is a use for slaves. I was proud that I had been put at his stirrup. In such small ways a slave may gather that she is exciting and beautiful.... " 'You are 1st girl,' I told Constance. ...the two girls, the blond and the brunet, first girl and second girl, yet both really new slaves, neither of whom had as yet even been branded." "She was dressed, save for her bondage strings, in much the same way as most of the women of the red hunters, bare-breasted, with high boots and panties. Thistle, however, behind her, was naked, in a northern yoke and on a leather leash. 'We are going to pick moss and grass,' she said. " 'How are her lessons in Gorean coming along?' "It was natural enough, in the circumstances, for Tafa to have addressed Phoebe as 'Mistress.' As Tafa was currently subject to us, and Phoebe was with us, this put Phoebe in a position of de facto priority to her. For example, in a group of female slaves, for example, in a pleasure gardens, a fortress or a tavern, there will usually be a girl appointed First Girl. Indeed, if there is a large number of slaves, there are sometimes hierarchies of 'first girls,' lower-level first girls reporting to higher level first girls, and so on. The lower-level slaves will commonly address their first girl as 'Mistress.' Thus, in some situations, the same girl may be first girl to certain girls and be subordinated herself to another, on a higher level, whom she will address as 'Mistress.' Sometimes a hierarchy is formed in which girls are ranked in such a manner that each must address the girls above her as 'Mistress.' More commonly, it is only the lowest slave, usually the newest slave, who must do this with all the others, whereas the others will address only their first girl as 'Mistress,' and , of course, any free woman whom they might, to their risk, or peril, encounter. " Flute Girl "This is not unusual at an inn. The proportions, then, would be one part paga to five parts water. Commonly, at a paga tavern, the paga would be cut less, or not cut at all. When wine is drunk with Gorean meals, at home, incidentally, it is almost always diluted, mixed with water in a krater. At a party of convivial supper the host, or elected feast master, usually determines the proportions of water to wine. Unmixed wine, of course, may be drunk, for example, at the parties of young men, at which might appear dancers, flute slaves and such. Many Gorean wines, it might be mentioned, if only by way of explanation, are very strong, often having an alcohol content by volume of forty to fifty percent." Guard Slave " ...too, a free person on Gor is almost never in any danger from a slave unless it be a guard slave, and he is attacking it's Master." Kajira of Gor, pg 123 House Slave ...I knelt small there by the table, trembling, my head down. I knew I had done wrong, daring to touch Milo, I, he so favored by the master and I only a house slave, but I had been unable to help myself.... "The brand itself, in the case of the girls, is a rather graceful mark, being the initial letter of the Gorean expression for slave in cursive script. If a male is branded, the same initial is used, but in a block letter." "The small, heavy lock on a girls slave collar, incidentally, may be of several varieties, but almost all are cylinder locks, either of the pin or disk variety. In a girls collar lock there would be six pins or six disks, one each, it is said, for each letter of in the Gorean word for female slave, kajira; the male slave, or kajirus, seldom has a locked collar; normally a band of iron is simply hammered about his neck; often he works in chains, usually with other male slaves." "In some cities, including Ar, an unchained male slave is almost never seen; there are, incidentally, far fewer male slaves than female slaves;" "The pools were beautiful, and yet I knew that somewhere, chained in darkness, were gangs of male slaves who cleaned them each night;" "Harold, as a boy, had once been a slave in the baths, those of the city of Turia, before he had escaped. He had told me that sometimes a Bath Girl, to discipline her, is thrown to the slaves in the darkness." "Male slaves, on Gor, are not particularly valuable, and do not command high prices. Most labor is performed by free men. Most commonly, male slaves are utilized on the cargo galleys, and in the mines, and on the great farms. They also serve, frequently, as porters at the wharves. Still, perhaps they are fortunate to have their lives, even at such a price. Males captured in war, or in the seizure of cylinders or villages, or in the pillaging of caravans, are commonly slain. The female is the prize commodity in the Gorean slave markets. A high price for a male is a silver tarsk, but even a plain wench, of low caste, provided she moves well to the touch of the auctioneer's coiled whip, will bring as much, or more. An exception to the low prices for males generally is that paid for a certified woman's slave, a handsome male, silken clad, who has been trained to tend a woman's compartments. Some of such bring a price comparable to that brought by a girl, of average loveliness. Prices, of course, tend to fluctuate with given markets and seasons. If there are few such on the market in a given time, their prices will tend to be proportionately higher. Such men tend to be sold in the women's auctions, closed to free men, with the exception, of course, of the auctioneer and such personnel. Some of such bring a price comparable to that brought by a girl, of average loveliness." "The litany and responses of the congregation were now completed and the initiates, some twenty within the rail, began to sing in archaic Gorean. I could make out little of the wording. There was an accompaniment by sistrums. Portions of the hymn were taken up by four delicated boys, standing outside the white on a raised platform. Their heads were shaved and they wore robes resembling those of the initiates. Choirs of such boys often sang in the great temples. They were young male slaves, purchased by initiates, castrated by civil authorities and, in the monasteries, trained in song. I supposed, to one versed in music, their soprano voices were very beautiful. I did not care much for them. Here in the far north, of course, in Kassau, to have any such boys, properly trained in the archaic hymns, indicated some wealth. I did not think such singers existed even in Lydius." "Slavery also, of course, encompasses the ownership of male slaves, for which there is less precedentdent in nature. Where males are concerned the institution is primarily economic. The labor of male slave is useful and cheap. It is applied in such places as the quarries, the roads, the great farms, in certain types of cargo galleys, on the wharves, at the walls of cities and in the forests. Male slaves are usually debtors or criminals; sometimes they are captives, taken in actions against enemy cities or facilities; sometimes they have merely accrued the displeasure of powerful men or families; some slavers, working in gangs, specialize in the capture of free men for work projects; they obtain a fee per head on a contractual basis." " 'You seem to have no male slaves,' I observed. Kettle Slave On her throat as well were wound the five coils of binding fiber, declaring her slave. Of the four girls only she did not wear silk, for she was only a Kettle Slave. She wore a brief tunic only of rep-cloth, already stained with grease and the spatterings of the kitchen. Her hair was not combed, and there was dirt on her knees and face. Her face was tired, and strained, and red, flushed from the heat of the cooking fires. Her hands had been blistered from scrubbing and burned from the cooking, roughened and reddened from the cleaning and the washing of the bowls and goblets. I found great pleasure in seeing the proud Telima, who had been my Mistress, as mere Kettle Slave. Lure Girl ...Such devices, of course, but without the authenticity and ultimate surrender, are often resorted to by "lure girls," slaves who serve as bait for captains who need crewmen, masters of work gangs, and such. Such work can be very dangerous, given the astuteness of many Gorean masters.... Male Slaves "Gorean men do not surrender their birthright as males, their rightful dominance, their appropriate mastery. They do not choose to be dictated to by females." "A male slave can be slain for touching a free woman." "For a male slave, or Kajirus, of the Wagon Peoples, and there are few, save for the work chains.” "It was a great shame, I knew, for a female slave to even have to touch a male slave, let alone to perform such an act as to address him as master. Female slaves despise male slaves. They regard themselves, and correctly, I suppose, as the rightful property only of free men and women, masters and mistresses." “Most male slaves in the city were pampered silk slaves, owned by Gorean women who had not yet learned their sex. Such slaves, when captured, if not slain in disgust by the victors, were usually herded together like slave girls, and chained for disposition in markets catering to their form of merchandise, markets patronized largely by free women. To be sure, there were virile male slaves in Ar. For example, many of the fellows who attended to the great refuse vats usually kept at the foot of the stairs in insulae were male slaves. Usually they worked under the direct or indirect supervision of free men. Occasionally they would be treated to a dram of paga or thrown a kettle girl for the evening.” “Sixteen tarsks was actually a high price to pay for a male silk slave. Most would go from four to six tarsks.” “I ran to the merchant and knelt before him. I pointed to the male slave. “He looked upon me!” I cried. “He looked upon me!” “Have you permission to speak?” He asked. “May a girl speak?” I asked, frightened. “Yes,” he said. Emboldened then, I pointed again to the male slave. “He dared to look upon me,” I said. I knew that male slaves are carefully supervised. I knew it could be quite unpleasant for one of them to be caught lookingupon a slave girl. To be caught looking upon a free woman could mean death for them. “He looked upon me” I said, pointing to the male slave. Surely he would be, at the least, whipped for his indiscretion. The beauty of slaves girls was for free men, not for the slaves likes of such as he. “This perhaps because many male silk slaves are chosen to be male silk slaves not because they are weak or like women, but because they are not; it is only that they are men, and often true men, who must serve women, totally, in the same fashion that a slave female is expected to serve a free master. To be sure, it is also true, and should be admitted in all honesty, that many male silk slaves are rather feminine; some women prefer this type, perhaps because they fear true men; from such a silk slave they need not fear that they may suddenly be turned upon, and tied, and taught to be women. Most women, however, after a time, find this type of silk slave a banality and a bore; charm and wit can be entertaining, but, in time, if not conjoined with intellect and true masculine power, they are likely to wear thin. “There are few male slaves with long pedigrees. Goreans, though recognizing the legal and economic legitimacy of male slavery, do not regard it as possessing the same biological sanction as attaches to female slavery. The natural situation, in the mind of many Goreans is that master set/slave relation is one which ideally exists between man and woman, with the woman in the property position. Male slaves, from time to time, can receive opportunities to win their freedom, though, to be sure, usually in situations of high risk and great anger. Such opportunities are never accorded to the female slave.” "Male slaves, on Gor, are not particularly valuable, and do not command high prices. A high price for a male is a silver tarsk, but even a plain wench, of low caste, provided she moves well to the touch of the auctioneer's coiled whip, will bring as much or more. Such men tend to be sold in women's auctions, closed to free men, with the exception, of course, of the auctioneer and such personnel." "The brand itself, in the case of the girls, is a rather graceful mark, being the initial letter of the Gorean expression for slave in cursive script. If a male is branded, the same initial is used, but rendered in a block letter." “The male slave, or Kajirus, seldom has a locked collar; normally a band of iron is simply hammered about his neck; often he works in chains, usually with other male slaves; in some cities, including Ar, an unchained male slave is almost never seen; there are, incidentally, far fewer male slaves than female slaves; a captured female is almost invariably collared; a captured male is almost invariably put to the sword.” "There were only a few bosk visible, and they were milk bosk. The sheds I saw would accommodate many more animals. I surmised, as is common in Torvaldsland, most of the cattle had been driven higher into the mountains, to graze wild during the summer, to be fetched back to the shed only in the fall, with the coming of winter. ...At the minor blocks in the small houses, or even the minor blocks in the Curulean, sales are conducted with a swiftness and dispatch that gives the girl little time to interest and impress buyers, with the result that even a very fine girl, to her indignation and shame, may be sold for only an average price to an average buyer, who may use her for little more than, as it is said, kettle and mat. "I am Mul-Al-Ka," said one, "honored slave of the glorious Priest-Kings." "I am Mul-Ba-Ta," said the other, "honored slave of the glorious Priest-Kings." "In the Nest," said Misk, "the expression 'Mul' is used to designate a human slave." Paga Slave I noted that Tendite now, again, served in the tavern. I noted, too, that, clad in yellow silk, belled on the left ankle, as another paga girl, the dancer, she whom Thurnock had sported with, too, carried a vessel of paga about. When she was not dancing, Sarpedon, I gathered, used her as a common paga slave, not unlike the others. It was more economical, I supposed, to do so. "The other girls, the common slaves, like Tendite, went with the price of a cup of paga." --In a paga tavern-- "She came through the kitchen door, in the tiny slip of diaphanous yellow silk alotted to paga slaves, bells locked on her left ankle." "...four paga slaves, in yellow silks, brought up from Laura, chained in a longboat, would have arrived in my camp. It had been the main object of Rim's journey to Laura to arrange for their rentals and delivery. According to Rim they were beauties. I hoped that he was right, for their master, Hesius, tavern owner in Laura, had not chared high rentals nor excessive delivery charges. We would have them for a copper tarn disk apiece, per day." " 'There are paga slaves,' I said, 'who must please their master's customers in his tavern.' " " 'There are paga slaves,' I said, 'who must please their master's customers in his tavern. There are the girls who staff the public kitchens and laundries. There are rent slaves, who may be rented to anyone for any purpose, short of their injury or mutilation, unless compensation be rendered to the master. There are state slaves who maintain public compartments, and work in offices and warehouses. There are girls in peasant villages, and girls on great farms, who cook and carry water to the slave gangs. There are beauties who are purchased for a man's pleasure gardens. There are other girls who work in the mills, chained to their looms.' Pierced Ear Slave Another custom, long practiced in the far south, below the Gorean equator, in Turia, for example, is the piercing of the ears of the female slave; this custom, though of long standing in the far south, did not begin to spread with rapidity in the north until, again, it was introduced in Ar. At a feast Marlenus, as a special treat for his high officers, presented before them a dancer, a female slave, whose ears had been pierced. She had worn, in her degradation, golden loops in her ears; she had not been able, even, to finish her dance; at a sign from Marlenus she had been seized, thrown to the tiles on which she had danced, and raped by more than a hundred men. Ear piercing, from this time, had begun to spread rapidly through the north, masters, and slavers, often inflicting it on their girls. Interestingly, the piercing of the septum, for the insertion of a nose ring, is regarded, generally, a great deal more lightly by female slaves than the piercing of the ears. Perhaps this is partly because, in the far south, the free women of the Wagon Peoples wear nose rings; perhaps it is because the piercing does not show; I do not know. The piercing of the ears, however, is regarded as being the epitome of a slave girl's degradation. Any woman, it is said, with pierced ears, is a slave girl. Some earth girls, of course, brought to Gor as slaves, as lovely meat for the slave markets, did have their ears pierced. Some of them did not learn for months why it was that they were treated with a roughness and contempt far beyond that of their imbonded sisters, subjected to a harsher authority and put beneath the rudest predations of a master's lust. And yet the answer was simple. They were pierced ear girls. It is said that the ear piercing of slaves, on Gor, originated in Turia. Certainly it was practiced there. After the fall of Turia the custom spread northward. It is now relatively common on Gor, for pleasure slaves. Slavers have discovered that a pierced ear girl commands a higher price. Pleasure Slave "The tavern, like the Capacian Baths, was within fair walking distance of the stadium. It was called, appropriately enough, the Green Tarn, and the proprietor was a genial fellow, bald and red-nosed, called Kliimus. The Pleasure Slaves who served wore green Pleasure Silk, and the tops of the tables and the walls were also painted green; even the curtains on the alcoves by one wall were green." "He suddenly snapped His fingers and, in the swift double gesture of a Gorean Master, pointed to a place on the dirt floor before Him, almost simultaneously turning His hand, spreading His first and index finger, pointing downwards. " 'Category,' I heard, '- Pleasure Slave.'" --Doreen, still a virgin about to be solld in the marketplace-- Red Silk "Cernus smiled. 'Our Physicians ascertained,' said he, 'that she is only a Red Silk Girl.' " 'But,' had said Ute, 'if a man seizes you, you are not to yield yourself to him, for you are white silk.' "The man whom I had served wine reached clumsily for me. "The red silk would diminish suspicion. A red-silked girl in a Gorean fortress is a not uncommon sight." " 'There is a stain on your thigh,' I said. " 'Tela, when captured,' he said, indicating a blonde, 'begged to be kept in white silk.' He laughed. 'After throwing her to a crew, for their pleasure, we put her, as she had asked, in white silk.' " 'To be sure,' I said, ' "white" in the context of "white-silk girl" tends less to suggest purity and innocence to the Gorean than ignorance, naivety, and a lack of experience. One expects a red-silk girl, for example, to not only be able to find her way about the furs, but, subject to the whip, owned and dominated, perhaps chained, to prove herself a sensuous treasure within them." "Similarly, the expression 'red-silk,' in Gorean, tends to be used as a category in slaving, and also, outside of the slaving context, as an expression in vulgar discourse, indicating that the woman is no longer a virgin, or, as the Goreans say, at least vulgarly of slaves, that her body has been opened by men. Its contrasting term is 'white-silk,' usually used of slaves who are still virgins, or, equivalently, slaves whose bodies have not yet been opened by men. "The buyers were also informed that I was 'glana' or a virgin. The correlated term is 'metaglana,' used to designate the state to which the glana state looks forward, or that which it is regarded as anticipating. Though the word was not used of me I was also 'profalarina', which term term designates the state preceding, and anticipating, that of 'falarina', the state Goreans seem to think of as that of being a full woman, or, at least, as those of Earth might think of it, one who certainly is no longer a virgin. In both terms, 'glana' and 'profalarina,' incidentally, it seems that the states they designate are regarded as immature or transitory, state to be succeeded by more fully developed, superior states, those of 'metaglana' or 'falarina'. Among slaves, not free women, these things are sometimes spoken of along the lines as to whether or not the girl as been 'opened' for the uses of men. Other common terms, used generally of slaves, are 'white silk' and 'red silk', for girls who have not yet been opened, or have been opened, for the uses of men, respectively." "I had been opened, I thought, I was now 'red silk!'" "Then I felt him remove the white-silk ribbon from my collar. In a moment he had fastened something else there, in its place, doubtless another ribbon, doubtless the red-silk ribbon which had been given to him earlier by Mirus. He jerked it down on the collar, snugly." Seduction Slave "The handsome, charming, suave, witty Milo," said the fellow, "is a seduction slave." Silk Girl " 'Look!' cried Pudding. 'a silk girl!' The expression 'silk girl' is used, often, among bond-maids of the north, to refer to their counterparts in the south. the expression reflects their belief that such girls are spoiled, excessively pampered, indulged and coddled, sleek pets, who have little to do but adorn themselves with cosmetics and await their Masters, cuddled cutely, on plush, scarlet coverlets, fringed with gold. there is some envy in this charge, I think. more literally, the expression tends to be based on the fact that the brief slave tunic of the south, the single garment permitted the female slave, is often of silk. southern girls, incidentally, in my opinion, though scarcely worked as their northern sisters in bondage, a function of the economic distinction between the farm and city, are often worked, and worked hard, particularly if they have not pleased their Masters." Silk Slave This is perhaps because many male silk slaves are chosen to be male silk slaves not because they are weak or like women, but because they are not; it is only that they are men, and often true men, who must serve women, totally, in the same fashion that a slave female is expected to serve a free master. The feminine type of male silk slave, incidentally, for better or for worse, is seldom selected for breeding purposes. Gorean slave breeders, perhaps benighted in this respect, prefer what they take to be health to what they think of as sickness, and what they take to be strength to what they deem weakness.... Savages of Gor, Pg 69 Thralls "There were only a few bosk visible, and they were milk bosk. The sheds I saw would accommodate many more animals. I surmised, as is common in Torvaldsland, most of the cattle had been driven higher into the mountains, to graze wild during the summer, to be fetched back to the shed only in the fall, with the coming of winter. “Bond-maid!” called he. She stopped, and turned. “Do you wish to go to the whipping post ?” he asked. This is a stout post, outside the hall, of peeled wood, with an iron ring near the top, to which the wrists of a bond-maid, crossed, are lashed over her head. Near the bosk shed there is a similar post, with a higher ring, used for thralls." “Sometimes,” said he, “to discipline a bond-maid, she is hurled naked among the thralls.” "Air, by means of a small bellows, pumped by a thrall boy, in white wool, collared, hair cropped, was forced through a tube in the bottom of each. The air above the canisters shook with heat. "Male thralls are chained for the night in the bosk sheds; bondmaids are kept in the hall, for the pleasure of the free men." “Thank you, my Jarl,” said the boy. The boy, unlike the adult male thralls, was not chained at night in the bosk shed. Ivar was fond of him. He slept, chained, in the kitchen." "Then, with the brazenness of a bond-maid, she, Thyri, who had been the fine young lady of Kassau, threw her kirtle up over her hips and, leaning forward, spit furiously at the thrall. "Behind the Forkbeard were myself, his men, those bond-maids who had accompanied us, and the thrall, Tarsk, who had been bought along, should the Forkbeard have made any heavy purchases. "It had been decided, however, a generation ago, by one of the rare meetings of the high council of rune-priests, attended by the high rune-priests of each district, that thralls should no longer be sacrificed; this was not defended, however, on grounds of the advance of civilization, or such, but rather on the grounds that thralls, like urts and tiny six-toed tharlarion, were not objects worthy of sacrifice; there had been a famine and many thralls had been sacrificed; in spite of this the famine had not abated for more than four growing seasons. this period, too, incidentally, was noted for the large number of raids to the south, often involving entire fleets from Torvaldsland; it had been further speculated that the gods had no need of thralls, or, if they did, they might supply this need themselves, or make this need known through suitable signs; no signs, however, luckily for thralls, were forthcoming; this was taken as a vindication of the judgment of the high council of rune-priests; after the council, the status of rune-priests had risen in Torvaldsland; this may also have had something to do with the fact that the famine, finally, after four seasons, abated; the status of the thrall, correspondingly, however, such as it was, declined; he was now regarded as much in the same category with the urts that one clubs in the Sa-Tarna sheds, or are pursued by small pet sleen, kept there for that purpose, or with the tiny, six-toed rock tharlarion of southern Torvaldsland, favored for their legs and tails, which are speared by children. If the thrall had been nothing in Torvaldsland before, he was now less than nothing; his status was now, in effect, that of the southern, male work slave, found often in the quarries and mines, and, chained, on the great farms. He, a despised animal, must obey instantly and perfectly, or be subject to immediate slaughter. The Forkbeard had bought one thrall with him, the young man, Tarsk, who, even now, followed in the retinue of the Forkbeard; it was thought that if the Forkbeard should purchase a crate of sleen fur or a chest of bog iron the young man, on his shoulders, might then bear it back to our tent, pitched among other tents, at the thing." “I may wish to use you to breed thralls,” he said. “You must be healthy for the farm.” Tower Slave "The position of the tower slave, in most cities, is very similar to that of the pleasure slave. The major difference is that the tower slave, whose duties are commonly, primarily, domestic, kneels with her knees in a closed position, whereas the pleasure slave, in a symbolic recognition of the fuller nature of her bondage, and its most significant aspects, kneels with them in open position. The tower slave, of course, like any other slave, is fully at the disposal of the master, in any and every way. The distinction between the tower slave and the pleasure slave, though honored in some markets, some specializing in girls sold primarily for housekeeping purposes and others in girls sold primarily for the pleasures of men, is not really a hard and fast distinction; it is not absolute; indeed, it can even be transitory. A girl who is ordered to open her knees, or who finds them kicked apart, for example, realizes that she has now become a pleasure slave. Similarly a girl in one context may function as one kind of slave and in another context, as another sort. Serving supper to a young man and his mother, for example, the girl may appear merely efficient and deferential. She kneels nearby, her knees closed. After the mother departs, however, she may kneel differently before the young man, with her knees open, his." Whip Slaves --In the Mines of Tharna-- There was pleasure in the eyes of the Whip Slave as he enjoyed the tormenting moment of suspense which his uplifted whip inflicted on the ragged, hungry slaves. The whip cracked. 'Feed!' he shouted." White Silk "Cernus smiled. 'Our Physicians ascertained,' said he, 'that she is only a Red Silk Girl.' "The meal was served by slave girls in white tunics, each wearing a white-enameled collar. These would be girls in training, some of them perhaps White Silk Girls, being accustomed to the routines and techniques of serving table." "One of them carried a large pitcher of the diluted Ka-la-na wine and stepped behind us, climbing the two steps to the broad wooden dais on which our tables were set. She bent over my left shoulder woodenly, her body stiff. 'Wine, Master?' she asked. "....I passed several chained slave girls kneeling on a stone tier. They were doubtless girls in training, and reasonably well advanced in training. They had been brought to see the races, that they might be pleased and stimulated, that they might return to their training refreshed and recreated. They were clearly enjoying themselves, and some were making bets, the stakes being pleasure beads from the contents of the jewelry and cosmetic box allotted to each, usually kept in her cell. They were fastened together wrist to wrist by slave bracelets. At each end of the line there was a guard. The slaves wore light, hooded cloaks, the length of which, when they stood, would fall slightly above the hem of their brief slave livery. The garments had rather large sleeves and fastened with a cord under the chin. It protected them from the sun to some extent but even more from the glances of the curious. Some of the girls, judging by the stripes on the hoods and cloaks were White Silk, and others Red Silk. The White Silk Girls, of course, having been released from the house, would have been placed in locked, iron belts." "Sura turned to Ho-To. 'The Tuchuk girl,' she said, 'keeps quarters with the Assassin. I do not object. Take the others to cells of Red Silk.' "I pressed against the bars putting my hands through, trying to touch him. " 'But,' had said Ute, 'if a man seizes you, you are not to yield yourself to him, for you are white silk.' " 'And here,' said Ute, 'lest the ardor of the men become too strong, this!' "He turned my head from side to side, looking at the earrings. He was drunk, and I could tell that he was aroused. The man whom I had served wine reached clumsily for me. "She trembled. I kissed her upon the lips. Her body, that of a white-silk girl, fresh to the collar, was terribly frightened." " 'I am a virgin,' she said. " 'You are a pretty slave, Evelyn,' I said. Its contrasting term is 'white-silk,' usually used of slaves who are still virgins, or, equivalently, slaves whose bodies have not yet been opened by men. "We were all naked. It was easier to tell, however, which of us were virgins, for the virgins, like myself, wore the 'iron belt.' Its horizontal position, like an iron oval, would close about my waist, and the vertical position, like a 'U', hinged in front to the horizontal position, flattened, shaped and slotted at its center, would swing up between my legs and there its flattened, laterally slotted end, like a hasp, would be placed over the staple on the left side of the oval ring, the right side, already over this staple, secured there, behind my back, with a heavy, dangling padlock. There was little danger I would be penetrated while wearing this device." "The buyers were also informed that I was 'glana' or a virgin. We wore such tunics when engaged as work slaves. The tunics of work slaves are usually brown or gray." "It was a sleeveless tunic pullover of brown rep cloth. It was generously notched on both sides at the hem, which guarantees an additional baring of its occupants flanks." Work Slave "About her forehead, tying back her dark hair, was a strip of rep cloth, brown, of the same material as the work tunic. I knew this meant she had authority among the girls. Ena was high girl in the camp, but I suspected that Ute might be first among the work slaves." "I looked up at Ute. 'You wear the Kajira talmit,' I said. "I wore a brief, one-piece brown work tunic. It was all I wore, with the exception of the collar. We wore such tunics when engaged as work slaves. The tunics of work slaves are usually brown or gray." "Ko-lar," she said, indicating her collar. "It is the same word in English," I cried. My eyes suddenly noted her one piece of jewelry -- a light, steel like band she wore as a collar. Beaded The red savages do not use steel collars. They usually use high, beaded collars, tied together in the front by a rawhide string. Subtle differences in the styles of collars, and in the knots which they are fastened on the girls' necks, differentiate the tribes. Within a given tribe the beading, in its arrangement and colors, identifies the particular master. Capture " . . . I looked in the rear-view mirror, terrified. About my throat, closely looped, was a narrow golden chain. It was controlled by two narrow wooden handles, in his hands "It was a girl-capture chain," I said "It is to be distingued from the standard garrote, which is armed with wire and can cut a throat easily. The standard garrote, of course, is impractical for captures, for the victim, in even a reflexive movement, might cut her own throat." Coffle The collars had front and back rings, were hinged on the right and locked on the left. This is a familiar form of coffle collar. The lengths of chain between the collars were about three to four feet long. Some were attached to the collar rings by the links themselves, opened and then reclosed about the rings, and some of them were fastened to the collar rings by snap rings. Another common form of coffle collar has its hinge in the front and closes behind the back of the neck, like the common slave collar. It has a single collar ring, usually on the right, through which, usually, a single chain is strung. Girls are spaced on such a chain, usually, by snap rings. Cord On some rence islands I have heard, incidentally, that the men have revolted, and enslaved their women. These are usually kept in cord collars, with small disks attached to them, indicating the names of their masters. Dance A wrist ring was fastened on her right wrist. The long, slender, gleaming chain was fastened to this and, looping down and up, ascended gracefully to a wide chain ring on her collar, through which it freely passed, thence descending, looping down, and ascending, looping up, gracefully, to the left wrist ring. If she were to stand quietly, the palms of her hands on her thighs, the lower portions of the chain, those two dangling loops, would have been about at the level of her kneels, just a little higher. The higher portion of the chain, of course, would be at the collar loop Kur She approached me. From my pouch I drew forth a leather Kur collar, with its lock, and sewn in leather, its large, rounded ring. "What is it?" she asked apprehensively, I took it behind her neck, and then, closing it about her throat, thrust the large, flattish bolt, snapping it, into the locking breech. The two edges of metal, bordered by the leather, fitted closely together. The collar is some three inches in height. The girl must keep her chin up. "It is the collar of a Kur cow," I told her. Lock A small, heavy lock on a girl's slave collar, incidently, may be of several varieties, but almost all are cylinder locks, either of the pin or disk variety. In a girl's collar lock there would be either six pins or six disks, on each, it is said, for each letter in the Gorean word for slave, Kajira Message "Did you note the collar she wore?" He had not seemed to show much interest in the high thick leather collar that the girl had had sewn about her neck. "Of course" he said. "I myself," I said," have never seen such a collar." "It is a message collar," said Kamback. "Inside the leather sewn within, will be a message." Northern "Look up at me," said the smith. The slender, blond girl, tears in her eyes, looked up at him. He opened the hinged collar of black iron, about a half inch in height. He put it about her throat. It also contained a welded ring, suitable for the attachment of a chain. "Put your head beside the anvil," he said. He took her hair, and threw it forward, and thrust her neck against the left side of the anvil. Over the anvil lay the joining ends of the two pieces of the collar. The inside of the collar was separated by a quarter of an inch from her neck. I saw the fine hairs on the back of her neck. On one part of the collar are two, small, flat, thick rings. On the other is a single such ring. These rings, when the wings of the collar are joined, are aligned, those on one wing on top and bottom, that on the other in the center. They fit closely together, one on top of the other. The holes in each, about three-eighths of an inch in diameter, too, of course, are perfectly aligned. The smith, with his thumbs, forcibly, pushed a metal rivet through the three holes. The rivet fits snuggly. "Do not move your head, Bond-maid," said the smith. Then, with great blows of the iron hammer, he riveted the iron collar about her throat.A man then pulled her by the hair from the anvil and threw her to one side. She lay there weeping, a naked bond-maid, marked and collared. Plank The primary holding arrangement for women on the benches, however, are not chains. Each place on the bench is fitted with ankle and wrist stocks, and for each bench there is a plank collar, a plank which opens horizontally, each half of which contains five matching, semicircular openings, which, when it is set on pinions, closed, and chained in place, provides thusly five sturdy, wooden inclosures for the small, lovely throats of women. The plank is thick and thus the girls's chins are held high. The plank is further reinforced between each girl with a narrowly curved iron band, the open ends of which are pierced; this is slid tight in its slots, in its metal retainers, about the boards, and secured in place with a four-inch metal pin, which may or may not be locked in place. Plate I could see the heavy metal collar hammered about the man's neck, not uncommon in a male slave. His head would have been placed across the anvil, and the metal curved about his neck with great blows. Rope I had worn only a rope collar, but yet it seemed to me that it, even in its coarseness, made me more beautiful, more exciting. When Thurnus had tied it on my throat he had shown it to me in one of Melina's mirrors. Turian The Turian collar lies loosely on the girl, a round ring; it fits so loosely that, when grasped in a man's fist, the girl can turn within it. Shipping "What sort of collar do you wear?" "A shipping collar, Master. It shows that I am a portion of the cargo of the Palms of Schendi." Vine It was hot, and the coils of the marsh vine about my throat were hot. Beneath the coils my neck was red, and slippery with sweat and dirt. I put my finger in the collar to pull it a bit from my throat. Kolar/Collar Attachments I did have an errand capsule, a capped, narrow leather cylinder, such as may be used for carrying notes, messages, and such, on a string around my neck, the string over my collar. Collar Sleeve I reached out, timidly, towards her throat. I touched the object there. "What is this?" I asked. "The silk?" she asked. "That is a collar stocking, or a collar sleeve. They may be made of many different materials. In a cooler climate they are sometimes of velvet. In most cities they are not used." Identification Anklet . . . My ankles were crossed and tied together with a short piece of rope. A metal anklet of some sort was fastened on my left ankle." "A girls identificatory ankled," I said, "It is removed after her delivery to Gor" |

On the other hand, the professional slaver, as a business practice, almost always brands his chattels, and it is seldom that an unbranded girl ascends the block. "I have five brands," said the metal worker, "the common Kajira brand, the Dina, the Palm, the mark of Treve, the mark of Port Kar." Eta smiled. She pointed to her brand. "Kan-lara," she said. She pointed to my brand. "Kan-lara Dina," she said. I repeated these words. Bond-maid Brand "The brand used by the Forkbeard, found rather frequently in the north, consisted of a half circle, with, at its right tip, adjoining it, a steep, diagonal line. The half circle is about an inch and a quarter in width, and the diagonal line about an inch and a quarter in height. The brand is, like many, asymbolic. In the north, the bond-maid is sometimes referred to as a woman whose belly lies beneath the sword." Dina "my own brand was the "dina"; the dina is a small lovely, multiply petaled flower, short-stemmed, and blooming in a turf of green leaves, usually on the slopes of hills, in the northern temperate zones of Gor; it is and exotic, alien flower; it is also spoken of, in the north, where it grows most frequently, as the slave flower; it was burned into my flesh" Kassar "The standard of the Kassars is that of a scarlet, three-weighted bola, which hands from a lance; the symbolic representation of a bola, three circles joined at the center by lines, is used to mark both their bosk and slaves." Kataii "..the standard of the Kataii is a yellow bow, bound across a black lance; their brand is also that of a bow, facing to the left.." Kef I had now been branded, a small, graceful mark burned into my left thigh, high, under the hip. It had a vertical bar, a rather strict one, with two curling, frondlike extensions, rather near its base, as though in submission to it. It looked a little like a 'K.' Knife "From the box he then took a small, curved knife and a tiny, cylindrical leather flask. I gritted my teeth, but made no sound. With the small knife he gashed my left thigh, making upon it a small, strange design. He then took a powder, orange in color, from the flask and rubbed it into the wound." Paravaci "the Paravaci standard is a large banner of jewels beaded on golden wires, forming the head and horns of a bosk its value is incalculable; the Paravaci brand is a symbolic representation of a bosk hed, a semicircle resting on an inverted isoceles triangle". Passage "The street was lined by throngs of Tuchuks and slaves. Among them, too, were soothsayers and haruspexes, and singers and musicians, and, here and there, small peddlers and merchants, of various cities, for such are occasionally permitted by the Tuchuks, who crave their wares, to approach the wagons. Each of these, I was later to learn, wore on his forearm a tiny band, in the form of spreading bosk horns, which guaranteed his passage, at certain seasons, across the plains of the Wagon Peoples. The difficulty, of course, is in first obtaining the brand. If, in the case of a singer, the song is rejected, or in the case of a merchant, his merchandise is rejected, he is slain out of hand. This acceptance brand, of course, carries with it a certain stain of ignominy, suggesting that those who approach the wagons do so as slaves." Penalty "I looked at her, puzzled. "Four men held me, naked, near the brazier. I could feel the heat blazing from the canister. The sky was very blue, the clouds were white. "The theif's scar in Port Kar is a tiny, three-pronged brand, burned into the face over the right cheekbone. It marks the members of the Cast of Thieves in Port Kar. That is the only city in which, as far as I know, there is a recognized caste for theives." Trevian "I have never seen a brand of Treve," I said. Tuchuk "the brand of the Tuchuk slave, incidentally, is not the same as that generally used in the cities, which, for girls, is the first letter of the expression Kajira in cursive script, but the sign of the four bosk horns, that of the Tuchuk standard; the brand of the four bosk horns, set in such a manner as to somewhat resemble the letter 'H', is only about an inch high; the common Gorean brand, on the other hand, is usually an inch and a half to two inches high" Branding Rack The girl was brought into the shop and stood in the branding rack, which was then locked on her, holding her upright. The metal worker placed her wrists behind her in the wrist clamps, adjustable, each on their vertical, flat metal bar. He screwed shut the clamps. She winced. He then shackled her feet on the rotating metal platform. "Left thigh or right thigh?" he asked. "Left thigh," said Ulafi. Slave girls are commonly branded on the left thigh. Sometimes they are branded on the right thigh, or lower left abdomen. The metal worker turned the apparatus, spinning the shaft, with its attached, circular metal platform. The girl's left thigh now faced us. It was an excellent thigh. It would take the mark well. The metal worker then, with a whell, tightening it, locked the device in place, so that it could not turn. |

Such slaves are reserved for various reasons. Some being that a girl is white silk and the Master wishes to be the only one to open her, or perhaps it is a punishment. Many Masters love their slaves in such a way, that they are jealous of the fact of another touching her. Also, men with honor, will not touch what does not belong to them. Men with honor, will usually respect anothers possession, even if the slave pleads to be used. "Although Marcus was harsh with his slave, pretending even to a casual and brutal disdain for her, he was also, it might be mentioned, extremely possessive where she was concerned. Indeed, he was almost insanely jealous of her. She was not the sort of girl, for example, whom he, as a host, even at the cost of a certain rudeness and inhospitality, would be likely to hand over for the nightly comfort of a guest. It would be at his slave ring alone that she would be likely to find herself chained." "Did you know that Hendow is thinking of placing restrictions on your use?" he asked. "Please, Master," she said, "take pity on me. Take pity on the miserable needs of a girl." "I heard the miserable cries of two girls. A man was coming from the cook shack, where Thimble and Thistle had hidden themselves. He now dragged them before us, bent over, a hand in the hair of each. “What have we here!” cried a man cheerfully. "Context determines much. If a young man is giving a proper and refined dinner, his girl, modestly attired, will commonly serve it, shyly and deferentially, quietly and self-effacingly, as befits a slave. She may even draw commendations from this mother, pleased that he has purchased such a modest, useful girl. “I have abused your slave,” said Bran Loort. "These girls may be exchanged among the men, but commonly they are not. Most masters are rather possessive about their slaves, particularly if they are fond of them." |

However, most slaves are disciplined and punished because they are insolent, mouthy, and a variety of other reasons. Some actions are harsher then others, some are desired, and some are even for the simple fact of training. Every slave on Gor has at one time felt the sting of the whip, if they haven't, it is only a matter of time before they do. Some forms of disciplines and punishments are: Denial of clothing and name, deprivation of sex, binding, whipping, cuffed, beaten, hood and gag, slave box, slave goad, whipping post, shaving of head, she quadruped, dung sack, notching of ears and lastly.... death. Just to name a few, some Masters use more extreme measures like, punishment of the Oar. “You cannot punish me!” she cried. “You are not my Masters!” "The discipline of a slave," I said, "may be attended to by any Free Person, otherwise she might do much what she wished, provided only her Master did not learn of it." The legal principle is clear, and has been upheld in several courts, in several cities, including Ar. " "Blood ran from my mouth; other blood I swallowed. My vision cleared; I could not believe the pounding of my heart. I had been cuffed. I knelt, terrified. At that time I did not realize how light had been my discipline considering the gravity of my offense. I had both spoken without permission, and broken position without permission. Most simply, I had been displeasing to a free man." "In Ar, as on Gor generally, a slave, on threat of torture and impalement, must endure whatever abuse a free person cares to inflict on him." "Punishment for having to repeat a command is always at the option of the Master. For example, a command might not be clearly heard, or might not be clear in itself, or might appear inconsistent with the master's presumed intentions. Whether punishment is in order or not is then a matter for judgment on the master's part." “Strip,” he said. "Where you ever happy with a master?" I asked acidly. "The leash, not uncommonly, can cause a woman to sexually blossom. This is presumably a function of such things as its actual restraint, which is quite real; its message to her that she is an animal, a slave; and its making clear to her, by a device, such as a bracelet, a brand or collar, what is the order of nature, who it is who controls her and who it is whom she must obey, who is the slave and who is the master. A leash, even apart from questions of training, of course, can have powerful emotional impact on a girl. It is a very useful way of convincing a girl that she is slave; similarly it can always serve as an effective reminder. Some girls do not seem to believe they are slaves until they have been leashed. But after that, and after having been put through "leash paces," there is seldom any doubt in their mind. Some girls beg to be leashed, sometimes crawling to their Masters, their leash held between their small, fine teeth. Most Masters use the leash at one time or another. A Gorean saying has it that a leashed slave is a hot slave." "Master," said the girl. "Excellent slaves are seldom beaten, for there is little, if any, reason to do so. To be sure, such a girl, particularly a love slave, occasionally desires to feel the stroke of the lash, wanting to feel pain at the hands of a beloved master, wanting to be whipped by him because she loves him, in this way symbolizing to herself her relationship to him, that of slave to Master, her acceptance of that relationship, and her rejoicing in it." “Any Free Man may discipline an insolent or errant slave,” I said, “even one who is the least bit displeasing, even one he might merely feel like disciplining. If she is killed, or injured, he need only pay compensation to her Master, and that only if the Master can be located within a specific amount of time and requests such compensation.” In virtue of such customs and statutes the perfect discipline under which Gorean slaves are kept is maintained and guaranteed even when they are not within the direct purview of their Masters or their appointed agents." “New slaves are often treated with great harshness. It helps them learn quickly that they are slaves. Later, when the girl is well trained and her services become perfections she may be treated more leniently, even lovingly, like a dog.” "And then, suddenly, she screamed, caught fully, helplessly, in the blurred, whistling slash of the five-stranded Gorean slave whip. ”A master takes no interest in the squabbles of slaves, it being beneath him. He of course would not approved had one of the girls been maimed, blinded or disfigured.” ”About her neck was a thick metal collar to which a heavy iron chain had been fastened, the chain itself was attached to a large iron ring placed in the floor. I supposed she was being disciplined.” ”What do you think should be her punishment?” asked Callimachus of me. ”Discipline?” breathed the girl. “Sometimes,” said he, “to discipline a bond-maid, she is hurled naked among the thralls.” "We carried a torch to the ice shed. We opened the heavy door, lined with leather, and lifted the torch, closing the door behind us. “Would you have touched her?” asked the Forkbeard. |

As a form of discipline, perhaps, a slave will be instructed and expected to speak third party. They will not be allowed to refer to themselves as I, but as their given name or whatever name the Master chooses to call her at that time. "Master," she whispered. "’Who?" she demanded. "Eat your gruel," said Flaminius. “A Master takes no interest in the squabbles of slaves, “I spoke calmly. “Masters do not much interfere in the squabbles of slaves. Let them impose their own internal order among themselves.” "A Master takes no interest in the squabbles of slaves, it being beneath him. He of course would not approved had one of the girls been maimed, blinded or disfigured." “The suspension of brush-and-comb privileges is also used, upon occasion, by the first girls as a disciplinary measure, within the coffle. Other disciplinary measures practiced among girls themselves involve such things as bonds, the control of rations and switchings. Girls, thus, under the control of first girls, reporting to the masters, commonly keep a good order among themselves. All, of course, including the first girls, are in all things subject, ultimately, to the total authority of the master.” A slave is property, a slave is a slave, a slave is totally at the whims and mercy of the Masters. Slaves must endure anything that is bestowed upon them, because they are slave. "In Ar, as on Gor generally, a slave, on threat of torture and impalement, must endure whatever abuse a free person cares to inflict on him." “I have abused your slave,” said Bran Loort. "One of the utilities of a slave, of course, is to occasionally serve as the helpless object upon which the Master may vent his dissatisfaction, his frustration or anger. Too, of course, they may serve many other related purposes, such as the relief of tensions, to relax oneself and even to calm oneself for clear thought." "Any free man may discipline an insolent or errant slave," I said, "even one who is the least bit displeasing, even one he might merely feel like disciplining. If she is killed, or injured, he need only pay compensation to her master, and that only if the master can be located within a specific amount of time and requests such compensation." In virtue of such customs and statutes the perfect discipline under which Gorean slaves are kept is maintained and guaranteed even when they are not within the direct purview of their masters or their appointed agents." Torment "One of the great pleasures of making love to a slave is the uncompromising exploitation of her marvelous sexual sensitivities, her helplessness, then putting her so much in your power, enabling you to do with her as you please and obtain from her what you want. She may be brought up and down, as you please, at your will, at your mercy, and played like an instrument. She may, if you wish, be held short of her ecstasy, cruelly, if you desire, or, in a moment, with a touch, granted it. There are few sights so exciting and beautiful as a helplessly orgasmic slave crying out her submission and love." Vagabonds of Gor, Page 216 Leashing "The leash can cause a woman to sexually blossom. This is presumably a function of such things as its actual restraint, which is quite real; its message to her that she is an animal, a slave; and its making clear to her who it is who controls her and who it is whom she must obey. A leash, even apart from questions of training, of course, can have powerful emotional impact on a girl. It is a very useful way of convincing a girl that she is slave.” Fighting Slave of Gor, page 366 Discipline “You dominated her, making her feel her womanhood, and its relationship to the male and then, her belly ready, aching, vulnerably aflame, helplessly stirred, you sent her packing.” Magicians of Gor, p 329 “Use discipline is within the prerogatives of a free person." Magicians of Gor, page 330 Sadism "Perhaps it should only be added that the Gorean Master, though often strict, is seldom cruel. The girl knows, if she pleases him, her lot will be an easy one. She will almost never encountered sadism or wanton cruelty, for the psychological environment that tends to breed these diseases is largely absent from Gor. This does not mean that she will not expect to be beaten if she disobeys, or fails to please her Master." Outlaw of Gor, Page 53 Pleasure Rack “I used it for one of it's two major purposes, that of exhibiting and displaying it's helpless prisoner. It's second purpose, of course, is to hold the woman in any position one pleases. I rotated her.” Rogue of Gor, page 28 Breast Bondage "Her breasts, of course, do not escape notice in her bondage. They are as open and available to the master as any other part of her…..so sweet and soft, so delicious and marvelous, so wonderful and exciting, will, like the rest of her, without a second thought, be submitted to attentions appropriate to her status. For example, they may be lovingly handled, and kissed and caressed by the master however and as long as he pleases. Too, they might be emphasized and accentuated by various forms of garments and bindings. The tying of slave girdles, for example, and the arrangement of binding fiber, often has this subtle, delicious feature in mind. Too, of course, they may be confined, if one wishes, in open brassiers of cord, or netting," Mercenaries of Gor, pages 389 & 390 Some games are played using slavegirls as targets. Most are to the advantage of young males for training purposes as well as entertainment. Slaves have no choice but to participate and do so pleasingly. For some slaves, these games could be fun for them as well. Girl Catch "The game of Girl Catch is played variously upon Gor; it can be played as informally and simply as it was in the camp of my captor, for the pleasure of his men, or it can be a fairly serious business, closely supervised and regulated in a sophisticated manner, as it is by merchant administrators in the rings outside the perimeters of the Sardar Fairs, where the young men of various cities compete. In one form there a hundred young men and a hundred young women of one city, the women selected for their beauty, enter the ring in competition with a hundred young men and a hundred young women of another city, similarly selected. In this form no hoods are worn. The object of the male is to protect his own women and secure those of the enemy. A girl is caught, stripped, bound hand and foot, and carried to the Girl Pit of the capturing city, into which she is thrown. If she cannot free herself, she is counted as a catch. Her own men may not enter the Girl Pit of the capturing city to free her. Sometimes this game is played with the winning side determined by its catches within a time limit, sometimes, in more brutal versions, by the first city which secures the hundred women of its enemy. A male is disqualified from further participation in the contest if he is forced from the ring. Women from the victorious city who may have been captured are, of course, upon the victory of their city, freed. Women from the conquered city, on the other hand, are not; they are kept; they are turned over to the young males of the capturing city; in the game in which the first hundred captures decides victory this means there is a girl for each participating young man, usually one he himself brought bound to the Girl Pit. Accordingly, particularly in the early phases of the game, the young males often devote their acquisitive attentions to those young women of the enemy city who are the most attractive to them personally, to those they would most enjoy taking home with them at the end of the day. This sport of Girl Catch, interestingly, when matters of honor are not thought to be involved, has been used upon occasion by cities to settle boundary disputes and avert wars." Slave Girl of Gor, page 54 Girl Run “Where will we run?” wailed Slave Beads to me. “Run!” cried the man with the torch. Slave Girl of Gor, pages 143 - 161 Capture "I smiled. I now had an excellent idea what had happened to the lovely, light-haired slave we had seen earlier on a lower landing, she whose tunic was opened and whose hair had been in such disorder. She had been “Captured” earlier. Mercenaries of Gor, page 278 & 279 Pick Up "The slave, for example, and this is commonly included in her training, seldom bends over to retrieve a fallen object. Rather she flexes her knees, lowering the body beautifully, and retrieves the object from a graceful and humble crouch. Sometimes, to be sure, commonly in serving at the parties of young men, certain objects, sometimes as part of a game, objects with prearranged significances among the young men, are thrown to the floor, and she must pick them up in a less graceful fashion. Whichever object she first touches determines to whose lusty abuse she must then submit. This game is sometimes played several times in the evening." Mercenaries of Gor, page 207 and 208 "I smiled at her. "This time, and this time alone," I said, "I will give you a choice." "Doubtless there were men here too, if not as on Earth, men who might be fretful, petty and weak, men the very sight and smell of which I might find offensive, men whose appearance and least touch I might find literally sickening, men I might find inutterably, disgusting, men who were unclean who were cruel, and loathsome and gross."........(please click here for complete quotation) "Slave girls relish compliments. Indeed there is a Gorean saying to the effect that any woman who relishes a compliment is in her heart a slave girl. She wants to please. Most Gorean men would not think twice about collaring a girl who responds, smiling, to compliments. A desire to please her Master. When she is complimented, she knows she has pleased him." "This matter of eye contact is interesting and has many facets. One of the most initially frightening and disturbing things to Earth women brought to Gor as slaves is the way Gorean men look at them. They are not used to being looked at as women truly, with appraisal, desire and ownership. This tends to confuse and frighten them, but also, of course, to stimulate them……Sometimes in training, incidentally, or as a discipline or punishment, the slave is not permitted to look into the eyes of the master. Indeed, sometimes, in training, she is not permitted to raise her eyes above the belt of the trainer…..also, many slaves find it difficult to look into the eyes of the master. He, after all, holds total power over them and they fear to displease him. What if he should interpret her gaze as suggesting the least insubordination or insolence?….But there is on Gor no discouragement, commonly, of eye contact between masters and slaves. “A Gorean girl, who has a first-rate man, and wishes to keep him, fights for him. There are generally other girls, collared girls, only too eager to take her place." “She is young to be a slave,” I said. “I heard the slave, some yards off, at the fountain, crying out. She had been taken to the lower bowl of the fountain. There she was sputtering and gasping, and crying out for mercy. Again and again was her head, held by the hair, forced down, held under the water and then jerked up again. “Please, Masters! Mercy, Masters!” she wept.” Magicians of Gor, Page 228 “I feared I was to be cut to pieces. He struggled, it seemed, to control himself. ‘Forgive me, Master!’ I wept. I crawled to him, my head down. ‘Forgive me, Master!’ I wept. I crawled to him, my head down. “Forgive me, Master!” I wept. I kissed his feet, fervently. He pulled away, in anger. He moved to the side. He kicked me twice, in fury. I returned to him on my belly, and showered my hair upon his sandals, and then again kissed his feet, again and again. ‘Forgive me, Master!’ I wept, an errant slave, one who had done wrong, pleading for mercy and forgiveness. He pulled back, away from me again, and then stood there, some feet before me, looking down at me. I was still on my belly. I looked up at him, a slave regarding her master with terror, lying before him, his property, on the tiles of his house. “Have her lashed,” he said. “Then have her hair cropped, and send her to the fields!” Magicians of Gor, Page 312 “I love you! I love you, my Master!” she cried. Magicians of Gor, Page 27 At times Masters may offer the slave to drink, it is always at his disgression... "He indicated the side of the cup from which I might drink. When a cup is shared masters and slaves do not drink from the same side of the cup." However, it might be to see how obedient and well trained a girl is. "He extended his goblet to me. “Drink,” he said, offering me the cup. I looked at the rim of the cup. I shook with terror. “A slave girl dares not touch with her lips the rim of that cup which has been touched with the lips of her master,” I whispered. "Excellent," said Verna. "She was trained in the pens of Ko-Ro-Ba," said Rask of Treve. " Captive of Gor, page 302 “He had called me a 'slut'. I did not really mind this. Indeed, something in me relished it. I remembered how I had behaved in the furs. The expression was, perhaps, I thought, with a shudder, quite appropriate. Certainly he had not permitted me to relate to him, in the least, in the inhibitory modalities of dignity and respect; accordingly, I had found myself relating to him in a deep, real, primitive, sexual, natural, biological manner, in a manner certainly not that of a free woman, but rather of a slave or slut. Doubtless this was supposed to be a part of his vengeance on me, but I, nonetheless, found it quite fulfilling. Something in me found it quite rewarding to relate to a man in this fashion. Too, I found it stimulating knowing that if I did not please him he might punish me.” Kajira of Gor, page 238 Strays “They wore short tunics but they were not slaves. Goreans sometimes refer to such women as 'strays.' They are civic nuisances. They are occasionally rounded up, guardsmen appearing at opposite ends of an alley, trapping them, and collared.” Kajira of Gor, page 139 Uncollared “The slave cannot free herself. She can be freed only by an owner. The condition of slavery does not require the collar, or the brand, or an anklet, bracelet or ring, or any such overt sign of bondage. Such things, as symbolic as they are, as profoundly meaningful as they are, and as useful as they are for marking properties, identifying masters, and such, are not necessary to slavery. They are, in effect, though their affixing can legally effect imbondment, ultimately, in themselves, tokens of bondage, and are not to be confused with the reality itself. The uncollared slave is not then a free woman but only a slave who is not then in a collar. Similarly a slave is still a slave even if her brand could be made to magically disappear or, if she has been made a slave in some other way, if she has not yet been branded. Indeed, some masters, somewhat foolishly, I think, dally in the branding of their slaves. Indeed, some, perhaps the most foolish, do not brand them at all. Such girls, however, when they come into the keeping of new masters, usually discover that oversight is promptly remedied.” Renegades Of Gor, page 273 "In this punishment, the girl clothed or unclothed, is bound tightly to an oar, hands behind her, her head down, toward the blade. When the oar lifts from the water she gasps for breath, only in another moment to be submerged again. A recalcitrant girl may be kept on the oar for hours. There is also, however, some danger in this, for sea sleen and the white sharks of the north occasionally attempt to tear such a girl from the oar. When food is low, it is not unknown for the men of Torvaldsland to use a bond-maid, if one is available on the ship, for bait in such a manner. The least pleasing girl is always used. This practice, of course, encourages bond-maids to vie vigorously to please their Masters. An Ahn on the oar is usually more than sufficient to make the coldest and proudest of females an obedient, eager-to-please bond-maid. It is regarded as second only to the five-lash Gorean slave whip, used also in the south, and what among the men of Torvaldsland is called the whip of the furs, in which the master, with his body, incontrovertibly teaches the girl her slavery.” “Put her to the oar,” had said the Forkbeard. Slave Goad "The slave goad, unknown in most Gorean cities, is almost never used except by professional slavers, probably because of the great expense involved." "….there hung a slave goad, rather like the tarn goad, except that it is designed to be used as an instrument for the control of human beings rather than tarns. It was, like the tarn goad, developed jointly by the Caste of Physicians and that of the Builders, the Physicians contributing knowledge of the pain fibers of human beings, the networks of nerve endings, and the Builders contributing certain principles and techniques developed in the construction and manufacture of energy bulbs. Unlike the tarn goad which has a simple on-off switch in the handle, the slave goad works with both a switch and a dial, and the intensity of the charge administered can be varied from an infliction which is only distinctly unpleasant to one which is instantly lethal." |

The serving of foods and beverages is to be pleasing and appealing. Beverages Wine Dairy Foods Meat Poultry Breads Fish Fruits Vegetables Spices Miscellaneous Ale The Forkbeard himself, now, from a wooden keg, poured a great tankard of ale, which must have been of the measure of five gallons...The tankard then, with two great bronze handles, was passed from hands to hands among the rowers...The men…drank ale… I saw cups of ale on the bank. I finished a horn of mead." "Many were the roast tarsk and roast bosk that had roasted over the long fire, on the iron spits. Splendid was the quality of the ale at the tables of the Blue Tooth..." "'The Forkbeard greets you!' shouted Ivar. I blinked. The hall was light. I had not understood it to be so large. At the tables, lifting ale and knives to the Forkbeard were more than a thousand men." Bazi Tea "'Make me tea,' I said. 'Is it ready?' I asked. I looked at the tiny copper kettle on the small stand. A tiny kaiila-dung fire burned under it. A small, heavy, curved glass was nearby, on a flat box, which would hold some two ounces of the tea. Bazi tea is drunk in tiny glasses, usually three at a time, carefully measured. She did not make herself tea, of course. She lifted the kettle from the fire and, carefully, poured me a tiny glass of tea. I took the glass." "In turn, from the oases the nomads receive, most importantly, Sa-Tarna grain and the Bazi tea." "Tea is extremely important to the nomads. It is served hot and highly sugared. It gives strength then, in virtue of the sugar, and cools them, by making them sweat, as well as stimulating them. It is drunk three small cups at a time, carefully measured." "From time to time the caravan stopped and, boiling water over tiny fires, we made tea." Black Wine Brewed from the rich dark beans grown on the slopes of the Thentis mountains. Served in a cup or a bowl with yellow and white sugars, and bosk cream to taste. Pots of the brew hang warming above the hearth. "'What is it?' 'Black wine from the mountains of Thentis', she replied. I had heard of black wine, but had never had any. It is drunk in Thentis, but I had never heard of it being much drunk in other Gorean cities...Then I picked up one of the thick, heavy clay bowls. It was extremely strong, and bitter, but it was hot, and, unmistakably, it was coffee… Thentis does not trade the beans for black wine. I have heard of a cup of black wine in Ar, some years ago, selling for a silver eighty piece. Even in Thentis black wine is used commonly only in High Caste homes...Originally, doubtless beans were brought from Earth, much as certain other seeds, and silk worms and such..." "She returned to her place with the pot of black wine. The next girl carried a tray on which were various spoons and sugars. She knelt, placing her tray on the table. With a tiny spoon, she placed four measures of white sugar and six of yellow in the cup. With two stirring spoons, one for the white and the other for the yellow, she stirred the beverage after each measure. She then held the cup to the side of her cheek, testing its temperature; timidly kissed the side of the cup and placed it before him." "I decided I might care to taste the steaming, black wine. I lifted my finger. The girl in whose charge was the silver vessel, filled with black wine, knelt beside a tiny brazier, on which it sat, retaining it's warmth. She rose swiftly to her feet. She knelt, head down, before me. She poured, carefully, the hot, black beverage into the tiny red cup. I dismissed her. The other girl, the white skinned, red-haired girl, also in vest, chalwar and veil, and bangles and collar, lifted her tray of spoons and sugars. But I turned away. She was not summoned. The girls, white skinned, were a matched set of slaves, one for the black wine, one for it's sugars." "The beans grow largely on the slopes of the Thentis mountains…black wine is a somewhat rare and unusual luxury." "I grinned and washed down the eggs with a swig of hot black wine, prepared from the beans grown upon the slopes of the Thentis mountains. This black wine is quite expensive. Men have been slain on Gor for attempting to smuggle the beans out of the Thentian territories." "'Second slave,' ... is a way of indicating that I would take the black wine without creams or sugars…I lifted the tiny silver cup." "From one side a slave girl fled to him, with the tall, graceful, silver pot containing the black wine. She returned to her place with the pot of black wine." Chocolate The beans for making chocolate were originally brought from Earth. The cacao tree now grows in the tropics of Gor. "'This is warmed chocolate,' I said, pleased. It was very rich and creamy. 'Yes, Mistress,' said the girl. 'It is very good,' I said. 'Thank you, Mistress,' she said. 'Is it from Earth?' I asked. 'Not directly,' she said. 'Many things here, of course, ultimately have an Earth origin. It is not improbable that the beans from which the first cacao trees on this world were grown were brought from Earth.' 'Do the trees grow near here?' I asked. 'No Mistress,' she said, 'we obtain the beans from which the chocolate is made, from Cosian merchants, who in turn, obtain them in the tropics.'" Liquers "'It is time for the liqueurs, slave,' I told her. 'Yes, Master, ' she whispered. 'Ah,'said Glyco.'The liqueurs!' First from the kitchen, bearing her tray, came the voluptuous slave of Aemilianuus. Behind her, too with her tray, came the little dark-haired slave. In a moment both were deferentially serving. The collared softness of the dark-haired girl well set off the metal of the tray, and the small multicolored glasses and bottles upon it." Mead A sweet, spicy, thick beverage, brew stored in a vat. This heady indulgence is served in hearty tankards. "'Jarl,' said Thyri, again handing me the horn. It was filled with the mead of Torvaldsland, brewed from fermented honey, thick and sweet." "Bera went to the next man, to fill his cup with the mead, from the heavy hot tankard, gripped with cloth, which she carried." "In the north generally, mead, a drink made with fermented honey and water, and often spices and such, tends to be favored over paga." "I held up the large drinking horn of the north. 'There is no way for this to stand upright,' I said to him, puzzled. He threw back his head again and roared once more with laughter. 'If you cannot drain it,' he said, 'give it to another!' I threw back my head and drained the horn." Paga Strong, pungent brewed, served hot, warm, or chilled. Hot paga is served in a sturdy clay bowl, and chilled bottles of paga are poured into goblets. Room temperature paga is usually held in botas. "He leaned over and tossed me a skin bag of Paga, from which I took a long swig, then hurled it contemptuously back into his arms. In a moment he had taken flight again, the bag of Paga flying behind him, dangling from its long straps." "I decided, if worse came to worst, that I could always go to a simple paga tavern where, if those of Tharna resembled those of Ko-ro-ba and Ar, one might , curled in a rug behind the low tables, unobtrusively spend the night for the price of a pot of paga, a strong, fermented drink brewed from the yellow grains of Gor's staple crop, Sa-Tarna, or Life-Daughter. The expression is related to Sa-Thassna, the expression for meat, or food in general, which means Life-Mother. Paga is a corruption of Pagar-Sa-Tarna, which means Pleasure of the Life-Daughter." "One of the serving slaves hurried to him and set before him a bowl, which she, trembling, filled from the flask held over her right forearm...He took the paga bowl in both hands..." "'Your paga' said the nude slave. 'Warmed as you wished'...... I took the goblet." "I went to the wagon to fetch a large bota of paga, which had been filled from one of the large jugs." "I threw a silver tarsk to the proprietor of the paga tavern, and took in return one of the huge bottles of paga, of the sort put in the pouring sling, and reeled out of the tavern...served in goblets." "I took the goblet, filled with burning paga...I threw from me the goblet of gold." "The beast returned from the cabinet with two glasses and a bottle. 'Is that not the paga of Ar?' I asked. 'Is it not one of your favorites?' he asked. 'See,' he said, 'It has the seal of the brewer, Temus'... He poured two glasses of paga, and reclosed the bottle." "'Paga!' called the man. A girl ran to the table and, from the bronze vessel, on its strap, about her shoulder, poured paga into the goblet before the seated man. ..."lifting and squeezing the bota of paga" "The slave girl stood, holding the two-handled bronze paga vessel." Rence Beer A pale, tangy beer kept in chilled botas, and served in tankards. "At such times there is drinking of rence beer, steeped, boiled and fermented from the crushed seeds and the whitish pith of the plant." "I had also been used to carry the heavy kettles of rence beer from the various islands to the place of feasting." "I had carried about bowls of cut, fried fish, and wooden trays of roasted tarsk meat, and roasted gants, threaded on sticks, and rence cakes and porridges, and gourd flagons, many times replenished, of rence beer." Sul Paga Potent alcoholic beverage which is distilled and almost tasteless. "My master extended his cup to me, and I, kneeling, filled it with Sul paga. I pressed my lips to the cup, and handed it to him. My eyes smarted. I almost felt drunk from the fumes." "Sul paga is, when distilled, though the sul itself is yellow, is clear as water...the still with its tanks and pipes lay within the village, that of Tabuk's Ford, in which Thurnus, our host, was caste leader. 'Excellent,' said my master, sipping the sul paga. He could have been commenting only on the potency of the drink, for Sul paga is almost tasteless. One does not guzzle Sul paga. Last night one of the men had held my head back and forced me to swallow a mouthful. In moments things had gone black and I had fallen unconscious." "Sul paga, as anyone knew, is seldom available outside of a peasant village, where it is brewed. Sul paga would slow a thalarion. To stay on your feet after a mouthful of Sul paga it is said one must be of the peasants, and then for several generations. And even then, it is said, it is difficult to manage. There is a joke about the baby of a peasant father being born drunk nine months later." Water "He came to me, bent over, tattered, swarthy, grinning up at me, the verrskin bag over his shoulder, the brass cups, a dozen of them, attached to shoulder straps and his belt, rattling and clinking...Without removing the bag from his shoulder, he filled the cup...the water flowed into the cup between a tiny vent-and-spigot device, which wastes little water, by reducing spillage, which was tied in and waxed into a hole in the front left foreleg of the verrskin. The skins are carefully stripped and any rents are sewed up, the seams coated with wax. When the whole skin is thoroughly cleaned of filth and hair, straps are fastened to it, so that I might be conveniently carried on the shoulders, or over the back..." Wines Ka-la-na Bottled ka-la-na, a sweet, strong red wine, made from the fruit of the ka-la-na trees, imported from the vineyards of or the Premium vintage imported from the Slave Gardens of Anesidemus. "Yes! It would be the one that would be red with Ka-la-na." "I went to his locker near the mat and got out his Ka-la-na flask, taking a long draught myself and then shoving it into his hands. He drained the flask in one drink and wiped his hand across his beard, stained with the red juice of the fermented drink." "...fetched a bottle of ka-la-na wine, from the ka-la-na orchards of great Ar itself." "...a bottle of ka la na, of good vintage, from the vineyards of Ar...I then took the wine, with a small copper bowl, and a black, red-trimmed wine crater, to the side of the fire. I poured some of the wine into the small copper bowl and set it on the tripod over the tiny fire in the fire bowl…I took the copper bowl from the fire and poured it into the wine crater." "A small bottle of Ka-la-na wine, in a wicker basket. I had never tasted so rich and delicate a wine on Earth, and yet here, on this world, it cost only a copper tarn disk and was so cheap, and plentiful, that it might be given even to a female slave. It was the first Gorean fermented beverage which I had tasted. It is said that Ka-la-na has an unusual effect on a female." "The man, one of Arn's, who had seen the Ka-la-na by the wall, crawled over to it. He pulled the bottles into his lap, and began to work at the cork of one of them...With his sleen knife he had pried the cork up a bit from the bottle. He then, slowly, with his fingers and teeth, managed to withdraw the cork." Kalda A hot drink made of distilled ka la na wine mixed with juices of fruits such as tospit and larma and hot, stinging spices. Heated in a large copper kettle and ladled into cups or bowls. "Kal-da is a hot drink, almost scalding, made of diluted Kalana wine, mixed with citrus juices and stinging spices. I did not care much for the mouth warming concoction, but it was popular with some of the lower castes, particularly those whom performed strenuous manual labor. I expected its popularity was due more to its capacity to warm a man and stick to his ribs, and to its cheapness ( a poor grade of Ka-la-na wine being used in its brewing) than to any gustatory excellence. Moreover, where there was Kal-da there should be bread and meat. I thought of the yellow Gorean bread, baked in the shape of round, flat loaves, fresh and hot; My mouth watered for a tabuk steak or, perhaps, if I were lucky, a slice of roast tarsk, the formidable six tusked wild boar of Gor`s temperate forests." "I had hardly settled myself behind the table when the proprietor had placed a large, fat pot of steaming Kal-da before me. It almost burned my hands to lift the pot. I took a long, burning swig of the brew and though, on another occasion, I might have thought it foul, tonight it sang through my body like the bubbling fire it was, a sizzling, brutal irritant that tasted so bad and yet charmed me so much I had to laugh." "Even the proprietor slept, his head across his folded arms on the counter, behind which stood the great Kal-da brewing pots, at last empty and cold." "Other girls now appeared among the tables, clad only in a camisk and a silver collar, and suddenly, silently, began to serve the Kal-da which Kron had ordered. Each carried a heavy pot of the foul, boiling brew and, cup by cup, replenished the cups of the men." Ta Wine A succulent, smooth, refreshing wine, served in a goblet served either chilled or room temperature. "…wines from the ta grape grown on the terraces of Cos." "It was Ta wine, from the Ta grapes of the terraces of Cos... In the last year heavy import duties had been levied by the high council of Vonda against the wines of certain other cities, in particular against the Ka-la-nas of Ar.." Turian Wine "I did not much care for the sweet, syrupy wines of Turia, flavored and sugared to the point where one could almost leave one's fingerprints on their surface." "One girl held our head back, and others, from goblets, gave us of wines, Turian wine, sweet and thick, Ta wine, from the famed Ta grapes, from the terraces of Cos, wines even, Ka-la-nas, sweets and drys, from distant Ar." Dairy Foods Butter Made from the milk of the verr or bosk... "'Olga,' he said, 'there is butter to be churning in the churning shed.' 'Yes, my Jarl,' said she, holding her skirt up, running from the place of our exercises." "We stopped by the churning shed, where Olga, sweating, had finished making a keg of butter." "'These females,' she said, indicating the Forkbeard's girls, who knelt at her feet, their heads to the turf, 'could be better employed on your farm, dunging fields and making butter.'" "I saw small fruit trees, and hives, where honey bees were raised; and there were small sheds, here and there, with sloping roofs of boards; in some such sheds might craftsmen work, in others fish might be dried or butter made." Cheese Made from the milk of the bosk or verr. "In the cafes I had feasted well. I had had verr meat, cut in chunks and threaded on a metal rod, with slices of peppers and larma, and roasted; vulo stew with raisins, nuts, onions and honey; a kort with melted cheese and nutmeg; hot Bazi tea, sugared and later, Turian wine." "The Tarn Keeper...brought the food, bosk steak and yellow bread, peas and Torian olives, and two golden-brown, starchy Suls, broken open and filled with melted bosk cheese." "Clitus, too, had brought two bottles of Ka-la-na wine, a string of eels, cheese of the Verr and a sack of red olives from the groves of Tyros." Eggs Like chicken eggs on Earth but smaller, gathered from the vulo. Also at times eaten raw. "Soon, I smelled the frying of vulo eggs in a large, flat pan…" "Eta piled several of the hot, tiny eggs, earlier kept fresh in cool sand within the cave, on a plate, with heated yellow bread, for him." Eggs of the White Grunt "In the hall was a open circle of small tables, at which a handful of guests, on cushions and mats, reclined. There were four men and two women at these tables, other than the Lady Florence, the hostess, and her guest of the past several days, the Lady Metpomene. The tables were covered with cloths of glistening white and a service of gold. Before each guest there were tiny slices of tospit and larma, small pastries, and in a tiny golden cup, with a small golden spoon, the clustered, black, tiny eggs of the white grunt. The first wine, a light white wine, was being deferentially served by Pamela and Bonnie." Milk (Vosk, Verr and Powdered) Smooth, creamy and nourishing. Milk is served chilled in cups. "Too, I had brought up a small bowl of powdered bosk milk. We had finished the creams last night and, in any event, it was unlikely they would have lasted the night. If I had wanted creams I would have had to have gone to the market." "…a brass container of verr milk and tiny brass cups..." "The smell of fruit and vegetables, and verr milk was very strong." "I heard the lowing of the milk bosk from among the wagons." "When the meat was ready, Kamchak ate his fill, and drank down, too, a flagon of bosk milk..." "By one fire I could see a squat Tuchuk, hands on hips, dancing and stamping about by himself, drunk on fermented milk curds, dancing, according to Kamchak, to please the Sky." Meat Bosk Large cow like animal that provides meat and milk. The bosk also provides hides and fur for clothing, wagon covers, and tents. "The bosk, without which the Wagon Peoples could not live, is an ox like creature. It is a huge, shambling animal, with a thick, humped neck and long, shaggy hair. Not only does the flesh of the bosk and the milk of its cows furnish the Wagon Peoples with food and drink, but its hides cover the domelike wagons in which they dwell; its tanned and sewn skin cover their bodies…" "With a serving prong, she placed narrow strips of roast bosk and fried sul on my plate." "I smelled roast bosk cooking, and fried vulo..." "He sat, cross-legged, behind the low table. On it were hot bread, yellow and fresh, hot black wine, steaming, with its sugars, slices of roast bosk, the scrambled eggs of vulos, pastries with creams and custards." Sausage Made of various meats, tarsk sausage is the one mentioned directly. There were several yards of sausages hung on hooks; numerous cannisters of flour, sugars and salts; many smaller containers of spices and condiments. Tabuk In the south, the tabuk is a yellow, one-horned antelope-like animal, used for meat, hides, and the like. The northern tabuk is much larger, tawny colored, also used for meat and hides. "They were northern tabuk, massive, tawny and swift; many of them ten hands at the shoulder, a quite different animal from the small, yellow-pelted antelope-like quadruped of the south. On the other hand, they too were distinguished by the single horn of the tabuk. On these animals, however, that object, in swirling ivory, was often, at its base, some two and one half inches in diameter, and better than a yard in length. A charging tabuk, because of the swiftness of its reflexes, is quite a dangerous animal." "…my mouth watered for a tabuk steak…" "Gripped in the talons of the tarn was the dead body of an antelope, one of the one-horned, yellow antelopes called tabuks that frequent the bright Ka-la-na thickets of Gor." Tarsk Six-tusked wild boar, pork like meat. "My mouth watered for a tabuk steak or, perhaps, if I were lucky, a slice of roast tarsk, the formidable six tusked wild boar of Gor`s temperate forests." "Before the feast I had helped the women, cleaning fish and dressing marsh gants, and then, later, turning spits for the roasted tarsks, roasted over rence-root fires, kept on metal pans, elevated above the rence of the islands by metal racks, themselves resting on larger pans." "I had carried about bowls of cut, fried fish, and wooden trays of roated tarsk meat, and roasted gants, threaded on sticks, and rence cakes and porridges, and gourd flagons, many times replenished, of rence beer." "The slave boy, Fish, had emerged from the kitchen, holding over his head on a large silver platter a whole roasted tarsk, steaming and crisped, basted, shining under the torch light, a larma in its mouth, garnished with suls and Tur-Pah." Verr Goat-like animal which provides meat and milk. "The smell of fruit and vegetables, and verr milk, was strong." "In the cafes, I had feasted well. I had had verr meat, cut in chunks and threaded on a metal rod…" Poultry Marsh Gant "I heard a bird some forty or fifty yards to my right; it sounded like a marsh gant, a small, horned, web-footed aquatic fowl, broad-billed and broad-winged. Marsh girls, the daughters of Rence growers, sometimes hunt them with throwing sticks." I had also been used to carry heavy kettles of rence beer from the various islands to the place of feasting, as well as strings of water gourds, poles of fish, plucked gants, slaughtered tarsks, and baskets of the pith of rence. "The cries of the marsh gants were about us now. I saw that her hunting had been successful. There were four of the birds tied in the stern of the craft." "...poles of fish, plucked gants, slaughtered tarsks..." "I had carried about bowls of cut, fried fish, and wooden trays of roasted tarsk meat, and roasted gants, threaded on sticks, and rence cakes and porridges, and gourd flagons, many times replenished, of rence beer." Tumits "I gathered that the best time to hunt tumits, the large flightless, carnivorous birds of the southern plains, was at hand..." Vulo Poultry like meat, and eggs (and brain) "I shot the spiced vulo brain into my mouth…" "Soon, I smelled the frying of vulo eggs in a large, flat pan…" "I smelled roast bosk cooking, and fried vulo...I held the leg of the fried vulo toward one of the girls..." Breads Biscuits "…brought forth some dried, pressed biscuits, baked in Kailiauk from Sa-Tarna flour." Sa Tarna Yellow bread made from Sa-Tarna grain. It is baked in round loaves and a staple served with most Gorean meals. Also used to brew paga. "There were great quantites of the yellow Sa-Tarna bread, in its rounded, six-part loaves." "...the yellow bread, warm and fresh..." "'Bread, Master?' she asked. She offered me a silver tray on which, hot and steaming, were wedges of Gorean bread, made from Sa-Tarna grain. I took one of them and, from the tureen, with the small silver dipper, both on the tray, poured hot butter on the bread." Fish Cosian Wingfish Called due to its ability to fly above the waters of Cos for short distances. Its livers are considered a delicacy. "'Now this,' Saphrar the merchant was telling me, 'is the braised liver of the blue four-spired Cosian wingfish. This fish is a tiny, delicate fish, blue, about the size of a tarn disk when curled in one's hand; it has three or four slender spines in its dorsal fin, which are poisonous; it is capable of hurling itself from the water and, for brief distances, on its stiff pectoral fins, gliding through the air, usually to evade the smaller sea-tharlarions, which seem to be immune to the poison of the spines. This fish is also sometimes referred to as the songfish because, as a portion of its courtship rituals, the males and females thrust their heads from the water and utter a sort of whistling sound. The blue, four-spired wingfish is found only in the waters of Cos. Larger varieties are found farther out to sea. The small blue fish is regarded as a great delicacy, and its liver as the delicacy of delicacies.'" Eels "Clitus, too, had brought two bottles of Ka-la-na wine, a string of eels, cheese of the Verr and a sack of red olives from the groves of Tyros." Oysters "Other girls had prepared the repast, which, for the war camp, was sumptuous indeed, containing even oysters from the delta of the Vosk" Parsit Fish "The main business of Kassau is trade, lumber and fishing. The slender striped parsit fish has vast plankton banks north of the town, and may there, particularly in the spring and the fall, be taken in great numbers." "The men of Torvaldsland are skilled with their hands. Trade to the south, of course is largely in furs acquired from Torvaldsland, and in barrels of smoked, dried parsit fish." "The men who had fished with the net had now cleaned the catch of parsit fish, and chopped the cleaned, boned, silverfish bodies into pieces, a quarter inch in width. Another of the bond-maids was then freed to mix the bond-maid gruel, mixing fresh water with Sa-Tarna meal, and then stirring in the raw fish." White Grunt "Three other men of the Forkbeard attended to fishing, two with a net, sweeping it along the side of the serpent, for parsit fish, and the third, near the stem, with a hook and line, baited with vulo liver, for the white-bellied grunt, a large game fish which haunts the plankton banks to feed on parsit fish." Fruits Apricots "I brushed away two sellers of apricots and spices." Tribesmen of Gor, page 45 Berries "I felt the pull of a strap on my throat, and opened my eyes. By a long leather strap, some ten feet in length, I was fastened by the neck to Ute. We were picking berries." Captive of Gor, page 208 Dates "The principal export of the oases are dates, or pressed-date bricks." Tribesmen of Gor, page 37 Larma "I took a slice of hard larma from the tray. This is a firm, single-seeded, applelike fruit. It is quite unlike the segmented, juicy larma. It is sometimes called, and perhaps more aptly, the pit fruit, because of its large single stone." Players of Gor, page 267 "The larma is luscious. It has a rather hard shell but the shell is brittle and easily broken. Within, the fleshy endocarp, the fruit, is delicious and very juicy. Sometimes, when a woman is referred to as a `larma,' it is suggested that her hard or frigid exterior conceals a rather different sort of interior, one likely to be quite delicious." Melons "'Buy melons!' called a fellow next to her, lifting one of the yellowish, red-striped spheres toward me." Peaches "On Gor, the female slave, desiring her master, yet sometimes fearing to speak to him, frightened that she may be struck, has recourse upon occasion, to certain devices, the meaning of which is generally established and culturally well understood….Another device, common in Port Kar, is for the girl to kneel before the master and put her head down and lift her arms, offering him fruit, usually a larma or a yellow Gorean peach, ripe and fresh." Plums "I had nearly stepped into a basket of plums." Raisins "…vulo stew with raisins, nuts, onions, and honey." Ramberries "A guard was with us, and we were charged with filling our leather buckets with ram-berries, a small reddish fruit with edible seeds, not unlike plums save for the many small seeds." Ta-Grapes "The grapes were purple and, I suppose, Ta-grapes from the lower vine-yards of the terraced island of Cos..." Tospit "Lola now returned to the small table and, kneeling head down, served us our desert, slices of tospit, sprinkled with four Gorean sugars." Vegetables Carrots "…a foliated leaf vegetable, called katch, and various root vegetables, such as turnips, carrots, radishes, of the sphere and cylinder varieties, and korts, a large brownish-skinned, thick-skinned, sphere shaped vegetable, usually some six inches in width, the interior of which is yellow, fibrous, and heavily seeded." Katch "…a foliated leaf vegetable, called Katch…" Kes "The principal ingredients of Sullage are the golden Sul, …the curled, red, ovate leaves of the Tur-Pah, a tree parasite, cultivated in host orchards of Tur trees and the salty, blue secondary roots of the Kes shrub, a small, deeply rooted plant which grows best in sandy soil." Kort "…a large brownish-skinned, thick-skinned, sphere shaped vegetable, usually some six inches in width, the interior of which is yellow, fibrous, and heavily seeded." Onions "…vulo stew with raisins, nuts, onions, and honey." "I have peas and turnips, garlic and onions in my hut." Peas "I had tarsk meat and yellow bread with honey, Gorean peas, and a tankard of diluted Ka-la-na, warm water mixed with wine." Radishes "…a foliated leaf vegetable, called katch, and various root vegetables, such as turnips, carrots, radishes, of the sphere and cylinder varieties, and korts, a large brownish-skinned, thick-skinned, sphere shaped vegetable, usually some six inches in width, the interior of which is yellow, fibrous, and heavily seeded." Red Olives "Clitus, too, had brought two bottles of Ka-la-na wine, a string of eels, cheese of the Verr and a sack of red olives from the groves of Tyros." Suls A root vegetable, similar to the potato and used as such; though also distilled to make sul-paga. "The sul is a large, thick-skinned, yellow-fleshed, root vegetable. It is very common on this world. There are a thousand ways in which it is prepared. It is fed even to slaves. I had had some at the house; narrow, cooked slices, smeared with butter, sprinkled with salt, fed to me by hand." "With a serving prong she placed narrow strips of roast bosk and fried sul on my plate." "The slave boy, Fish, had emerged from the kitchen, holding over his head on a large silver platter a whole roasted tarsk, steaming and crisped, basted, shining under the torch light, a larma in its mouth, garnished with suls and Tur-Pah." Turnips "…a foliated leaf vegetable, called katch, and various root vegetables, such as turnips, carrots, radishes, of the sphere and cylinder varieties, and korts, a large brownish-skinned, thick-skinned, sphere shaped vegetable, usually some six inches in width, the interior of which is yellow, fibrous, and heavily seeded." Spices Garlic "I have peas and turnips, garlic and onions in my hut." Honey "In the cafes I had feasted well. I had verr meat, cut in chunks and threaded on a metal rod, with slices of peppers and larma, and roasted; vulo stew with raisins, nuts, onions and honey; a kort with melted cheese and nutmeg; hot Bazi tea, sugared and later, Turian wine." "I saw small fruit trees, and hives, where honey bees were raised; and there were small sheds, here and there, with sloping roofs of boards; in some such sheds might craftsmen work, in others fish might be dried or butter made." Nutmeg "..a kort with melted cheese and nutmeg." Peppers "Some of the peppers and spices, relished even by the children of the Tahari districts, were sufficient to convince an average good fellow of Thentis or Ar that the roof of the mouth and his tongue were being torn out of his head." Salt Comes in two varieties, red or white. Most salt is mined in Klima, though the Torvaldlanders get their salt from sea water or seaweed. "Most salt at Klima is white, but certain of the mines deliver red salt, red from the ferrous oxide in its composition, which is called the Red Salt of Kasra, after its port of embarkation, at the juncture of the Upper and Lower Fayeen." "…salt, incidentally, is obtained by the men of Torvaldsland, most commonly, from sea water or the burning of seaweed. It is also, however, a trade commodity, and is sometimes taken in raids. The red and yellow salts of the south, some of which I saw on the tables, are not domestic to Torvaldsland." "...Near him in places of honor, at a long, low table, above the bowls of yellow and red salt...." Sugar Two varieties of sugar: white and yellow. "With a tiny spoon, its tip no more than a tenth of a hort in diameter, she placed four measures of white sugar, and six of yellow in the cup…" Miscellaneous Candy "He yelled something raucous and ribald. It had to do with "tastas" or "stick candies." These are not candies, incidentally, like sticks, as for example, licorice or peppermint sticks, but soft, rounded, succulent candies, usually covered with a coating of syrup or fudge, rather in the nature of the caramel apple, but much smaller, and, like a caramel apple, mounted on sticks. The candy is prepared and the stick, from the bottom, is thrust up, deeply, into it. It is then ready to be eaten." ... "These candies are usually sold at such places as parks, beaches, and promenades, at carnivals, expositions and fairs, and at various types of popular events, such as plays, song dramas, races, games, and kaissa matches. They are popular even with children." ... "The expression was sometimes used by men for women such as we." Nuts "…vulo stew with raisins, nuts, onions, and honey." Pastries "On the tray were assorted pastries, on the other was a variety of small, spiced custards." The pith (or center of the stem) is edible. Can be made into pastes or porridges. Also used to make into rence beer. "The plant has many uses besides serving as a raw product in the manufacture of rence paper…from the stem the rence growers can make reed boats, sails, mats, cords and a kind of fibrous cloth; further it's pith is edible…" "In the morning, before dawn, she had placed in my mouth a handful of rence paste." "In a moment the woman had returned with a double handful of wet rence paste. When fried on flat stones it makes a kind of cake, often sprinkled with rence seeds." "I had carried about bowls of cut, fried fish, and wooden trays of roasted tarsk meat, and roasted gants, threaded on sticks, and rence cakes and porridges, and gourd flagons, many times replenished, of rence beer." Sullage Common Gorean soup made with sul, tur-pah and kes. "First she boiled and simmered a kettle of Sullage, a common Gorean soup consisting of three standard ingredients, and, as it is said, whatever else may be found, saving only the rocks of the field. "The principal ingredients of Sullage are the golden Sul, …the curled, red, ovate leaves of the Tur-Pah, a tree parasite, cultivated in host orchards of Tur trees and the salty, blue secondary roots of the Kes shrub, a small, deeply rooted plant which grows best in sandy soil." "The slave boy, Fish, had emerged from the kitchen, holding over his head on a large silver platter a whole roasted tarsk, steaming and crisped, basted, shining under the torch light, a larma in its mouth, garnished with suls and Tur-Pah." |

Even a short serve must be pleasing to watch and must show your feelings as well as your movements. 1. Acknowledge the Master or free person, that you heard his/their command with a “Yes, Master/Mistress”. If you are unsure about preferences for the drink, ask and be sure you heard correctly and understand what's required. Ex: Ka-la-na warm or cold? Paga hot or cool? Black-wine first or second slave. 2. Rise from your kneel, or whatever position you are in, and go to the kitchen (There is no " servery” states in the books, food and drinks were found in the kitchens.) Express your appearance, your feelings, your honor in serving. 3. Carefully chose the vessel to serve the drink in. Learn which vessels are commonly used for which drink. Try to incorporate the things you know about the one you are serving if known. Do they prefer a goblet, glass or bowl? A horn or a tankard? Be sure it is the correct serving container for the drink you are serving and check it over to be sure it is clean and perfectly free of scratches and nicks. “I watched her carefully wipe the goblet. 4. Fill the vessel, make sure you know where the beverage is stored and retrieve it accordingly. Note the warmth of the firepit, the hot handles on the pots, the chill of the cold room, the selection of wines in the wine rack, etc. Be careful not to spill the drink. It's not "cute" to trip, play or spill it over your body. A slave will be beaten for such things. "I almost fainted. I went to him and, shaking, poured paga into his goblet; I was terrified that I might spill it; it was not only that I feared, should I spill the beverage, that I might be beaten for my clumsiness; it was even more than I wished to appear graceful and beautiful before him; but I shook, and was awkward; the paga sloshed in the goblet but, as my heart almost stood still, it did not spill; he looked at me; I was a clumsy girl, and a poor slave; I felt so small and unworthy before him; I was not only a girl, small and weak before these mighty men; I was not even a good slave.” 5. Return to the Master/Mistress. Again, express your appearance, your body, movements, and feelings. Paint a picture of what he is seeing as he watches you approach and what you are feeling as you move back to him and lower to a kneel. "Slowly, alone, a paga slave, naked and collared, she approached my table. 6. Ask if they wish it sweetened. Kiss the side of the vessel as if your lips were kissing the lips of the Master, and with that much passion. (Testing a drink for poison is not in the books, as poison was not much of a consideration in that manner. However, testing for a drinks temperature was done by placing the vessel to the cheek) “Trembling, I extended the goblet to him. He did not take it. I shrank back, confused. I did not know what to do. I realized then that I had, in my confusion and distress, forgotten to place my lips upon the goblet in subservience. I quickly pressed my lips to the goblet, kissing it. Then, suddenly, as I was to hand it to him, I boldly, again, lifted the goblet s side to my lips. Holding it in both hands, I kissed it again, lovingly, delicately, fully, lingering, my eyes closed. I had never kissed a boy on Earth with the helplessness and passion that I bestowed upon the mere goblet of my Gorean captor. I belonged to him. I was his. I loved him! I felt the metal of the cup beneath my full, pressing lips. I opened my eyes. I proffered, tears in my eyes, the cup of paga to my captor. It was though, with the cup, I was giving myself to him. Yet I knew I needed not give myself to him, for I was his, and a slave girl; he could take me whenever he wished me. He took the cup from my hands, and dismissed me." He extended his goblet to me. "Drink," he said, offering me the cup. “One of the men lifted his cup and I hurried to him. I took the cup and filled it...then I pressed my lips to his cup as I must, as a slave girl, and handed it to him." My master extended his cup to me, and I, kneeling, filled it with Sul paga. I pressed my lips to the cup, and handed it to him. My eyes smarted. I almost felt drunk from the fumes." “Now,” said he, “lift the goblet to your lips and kiss it lingeringly, then proffer it to me, arms extended, head down.” "...she, looking at him, timidly kissed the side of the cup and placed it before him." "Slowly, alone, a paga slave, naked and collared, she approached my table. 7. Lift the vessel, bowing your head between outstretched arms. "I pressed the goblet into my lower abdomen and then lifted it to my lips, where, turning my head, I kissed it. Then, head down, kneeling back on my heels, arms extended, I proffered it to the Mistress. "Excellent, Jason," she said.” "Then again kneeling back on her heels, her knees wide, extending her arms to me, the cup in her hands, she proffered me the drink. 8. Say what is being offered, and that you hope he/she is pleased with it and the serve. “For your pleasure,” she said, “I bring you paga and a slave.” "She proffered the cup to me. She knelt back on her heels, her knees wide, and extended her arms to me, the cup in her hands. ..Then again, kneeling back on her heels, her knees wide, extending her arms to me, the cup in her hands, she proffered me the drink. “Speak,” I said to her 9. Give thanks for allowing you the privilege of serving. Then, continue to kneel until you are dismissed. Wwithout speaking, addressing any others, or moving. You are in complete service until told otherwise. "You may serve me wine, " I said. "Now take the goblet, " he said, " and hold the metal against your body, pushing inward. "I took the goblet and held it, tightly, to my body. I held the round, heavy metal against me, below my brassiere. "Lower," he said, "against your belly." I then held the goblet lower. "Press it more inward, " he said. I did so. I can still feel the cold metal against me, firmly, partly against the silk of my undergarment, partly against my belly. "Now," said he, "lift the goblet to your lips and kiss it lingeringly, then proffer it to me, arms extended, head down." It is your duty as a slave to serve the Free, it is your duty to try hard to be pleasing and serve perfectly. If they didn't wish your service, they would not have asked or commanded such of you. Laziness in a slave will not be tolerated. If you are in a new slave status, as in recently collared, state so. However, such and excuse will not work forever, for some it might not work at all. Beg forgiveness or perhaps permission to observe another in order for you to learn. Basic serves can and should be learned in a matter of ehns, there is no excuses. Slaves serving the free are expected to know what types of food and drink are available. Perhaps even the preferences of ones food and drink. Slaves are expected to learn how these things are prepared and how to properly serve them. Serves should reflect who you and who owns you. Serving is something slaves desire, and to be allowed such is an honor. Make sure this is expressed in every move made. In some cases, slaves may feel they are competed, one should not worry or care what or how others serve or are doing. Your main focus is on the one you are serving and doing it pleasingly and to the best of your abilities. In times, such serves are perfected and certain slaves are even sought out for service. There are times when slaves will not know if they should offer service or not, or just make themselves available... waiting quietly. The best advice is to learn the preferences of the free. Some men enjoy the begging of slaves to be of use, others wish a slave to remain seen beautifully but not heard unless called upon. Perhaps, it might all come down to what the owner of the slave wishes of his slave. When serving, show your heart and belly. Some slaves are more natural then others, if one seems more pleasing and desired more... learn from them, incorporate such movements or words into your own. Practice makes perfect, but remember, what's in your heart and belly will naturally show in everything you do. Express you care, that its important to you to please, and focus. Be grateful for being allowed to serve. When you are in service....service being delivering food, warming his feet, conversation, whatever pleases the free......you must concentrate all your attention on whom you are with. Do not greet or chat with others, without first receiving permission from the one you serve. A slave should not draw attention to herself, either by commenting and making gestures while the free are talking. The Masters and Mistresses are always aware that slaves are present. When, and if, it pleases them, they will call on her for a particular service. Serving can come in any form, to being looked at, conversing, displaying, serving food or beverage, being used as a foot rest, even furring. There is no one form of serving, but many, and each should be treated the same. With focus, desire and devoted obedience. Always remembering, your performance is a reflection of your owner. Be thankful for being allowed to serve. Never take for granted it is a right to serve. In fact, it is a priveleg, once that is easily taken away as it is given. The free understand a slaves ache and need to be pleasing and of use, but it is ultimately up to the free if they wish it, and allow it. There is not a ceremony for serving Bazi tea in the books. There is mention of the tea, however, and that it is usually served in three small cups. "'I looked at the tiny copper kettle on the small stand. A tiny kaiila-dung fire burned under it. A small, heavy, curved glass was nearby, on a flat box, which would hold some two ounces of the tea. Bazi tea is drunk in tiny glasses, usually three at a time, carefully measured." "'Make me tea,' I said. I took the glass." There has become, however, an acceptable Bazi tea serve for online Gor. These are the basics of such serve: The first cup represents the bitter fruits of life, for some it represents the past. The second cup represents contentment of adulthood, for some it represents the present. The third cup represents the enlightenment that comes with experience and old age, for some it represents the future. It's all depending on how the slave is taught for which she speaks in her serves. |
