The song, The Battle Hymn of the Republic has been echoing in my brain for days now. This hymn was written in 1762 by Julia Ward Howe. This song glorifies truth and freedom and what your country has truly been. I remembered when I first listened to and truly heard the words of the song in 1980 in New York City. I was with a group of patriotic truth seekers on the occasion of Ronald Reagan’s winning the Presidency. When the reality of the beauty of the meaning of the song hit me at that moment, tears came to my eyes. I began to understand what humanity actually could be. To live in freedom and truth is what is intended for humanity and what, with commitment, could evolve to. This song gives a sense of the possibility for what humanity.
The Battle Hymn of the Republic:
Elizabeth Willing Powel, a Philadelphia socialite, in 1787 asked Dr. Benjamin Franklin,
“Doctor what have we got. a republic or a monarchy?” Franklin replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.” More on this conversation was published in 1803 in the The Republican by James McHenry

What has happened to the conviction of the great vision of the citizens of the United States?
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.
Chorus:
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps:
His day is marching on.
Chorus
I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
“As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel,
Since God is marching on.”
Chorus
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.
Chorus
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.
Chorus
He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is Wisdom to the mighty, He is Succour to the brave,
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time His slave,
Our God is marching on.
A dramatically different theme exists in the Engish national anthem and secondary anthem in Canada. Instead of the enoblement of humanity, soldiers and society are told to fight for king and country. Compare the lyrics of the fawning English national anthem to elegance and inclusivity of The Battle Hymn of the Republic. The difference in the two themes define the value, determined by the ‘leadership’ of us, as humans and citizens.
God save our gracious King,
Long live our noble King,
God save the King!
Send him victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the King!
O Lord our God arise,
Scatter our enemies,
And make them fall!
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all!
Not in this land alone,
But be God’s mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world o’er.
From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the King!
O’er his thine arm extend,
For Britain’s sake defend,
Our father, prince, and friend,
God save the King!
Thy choicest gifts in store,
On him be pleased to pour,
Long may he reign!
May he defend our laws,
And ever give us cause,
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the King!

The truth does not march on in this country as it an in the United States. Canada is still a British colony, under Crown control, but most people are unaware of it. Vague descriptions are taught in schools regarding ownership of the land in Canada maintaining that unquestioned status.
From the Canadian Encyclopedia, “Crown land, sometimes called public land, is the term used to describe land owned by Canada’s federal or provincial governments. Authority for control of these public lands rests with the Crown, hence their name. Less than 11% of Canada’s land is in private hands; 41% is federal crown land and 48|% is provincial rown land. Thus, 89% of land in Canada is Crown land. From Wikipedia, “Crown land, also known as royal domain, is a territorial area belonging to the monarch, who personifies the Crown. It is equivalent of an entailed estate and passes with the monarch, being inseparable from it.”
Who actually controls Canada? The governmental composition in Canada includes, the Senate (upper house of Parliament), the Crown (represented by monarch’s Governor General), and lastly, the House of Commons (presumably representing the people). The education system presents vague descriptions of these functions ensuring complacency and obedience. While stating that the role of the Governor General in Canada is mainly ceremonial, here are some of the actual powers as described in Wikipedia.
- Representative of the Monarch: The Governor General serves as the representative of King Charles III, the Canadian monarch, in Canada.
- Head of State: Although the Queen is the official head of state, the Governor General is Canada’s de facto head of state, carrying out constitutional duties on behalf of the monarch.
- Ceremonial Duties: The Governor General performs various ceremonial duties, such as:
- Swearing-in of members of the Canadian Armed Forces and other officials.
- Attending state visits and welcoming foreign dignitaries.
- Presenting honors and awards.
- Participating in military ceremonies and inspections.
- Constitutional Duties: The Governor General exercises certain constitutional powers, including:
- Appointing senators and superior court judges on the advice of the Prime Minister.
- Granting and withholding royal assent to bills passed by Parliament.
- Signing official documents, such as orders-in-council.
- Non-Partisan Safeguard: The Governor General serves as a guarantor of continuous and stable governance, ensuring that the government remains accountable and responsible.
- Commander-in-Chief: Although the Queen is technically the Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Armed Forces, the Governor General acts in her place, issuing commands and visiting military bases.
Overall, the Governor General plays a vital role in upholding the Canadian constitutional monarchy, ensuring the stability and continuity of the government, and representing Canada on the international stage. (This defines the role of the elected representatives, by the population, as extraneous.)

This why our politicians including the Prime Minister, federal police force or Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and most individuals in the governmental structure firstly pledge their allegiance to the monarch. The population has far less control of events in this country than they can possibly imagine. This country has, probably, the most apathetic population in the world.
The United States had a painful history of British control, then a tenuous freedom, but a history that includes the success of winning understanding of a higher purpose. I hope the beauty within the song The Battle Hymn of the Republic becomes your reality again.
Just a few days ago I found out the entire Amish community in my area in Ontario recently moved their colony to the United States. While I would love to see Canada awaken to our reality, and have a revolution, another part of me would simply love to join the Amish.
